I'm not buying a winch to last 40 years. Why on earth would you when technology changes so fast. No thanks, anything over a couple of years gets replaced anyway. My SB X20 9500 lb winch works great and is 7 years old, but I bought a new winch for the JL leaving the old X20 which still works fine sitting in the garage as a spare.
My point was they're bulletproof. I put my life into the hands of my winch at times. I'll go with what I trust.

Great info. Where can you buy a winch line made out of that? I did some searching, but didn't really find a place to purchase it.

i'd be looking at amsteel blue in 5/16". 13,700# working strength
you'd probably be fine with 1/4" at 8,600#, but better safe than sorry.

if you were serious about running it, i'd go to home desperate, and
buy some 5/16" solid core cheap rope, and see how much you could
wind on, and then order that much.

600' is $800. most places will cut, for a price. i'd bet you could get 150'
on the drum. so, a $1.20 a foot.....

Yeah, trust me they aren't bullet proof. I had a 9500Ti break internally pulling a suzuki sidekick out of sand. My Xeon just quit working, multiple times. My experience is that Warn's fail too. My experience says that Warn isn't any more "bulletproof" than Smittybilt. The Winch torture tests that happen every years will back that up as well.

well, i actually got to try out the zeon platinum saturday night. was out in borrego springs,
just past the sea serpent, on the flat sandy area, and found, of all things, a brand new mustang
GT buried above the rear axle in silt. it was only about 15' from the road when it buried itself.

rental car, three millenials inside, looking like they were looking for burning man. wind blowing
about 30 mph, quite the sandstorm. looks like they were out viewing the sculptures on the playa,
and didn't make it to the road.

i offered to pull them out, if they held me harmless for any unfortunate outcomes to this.
drove the jeep across the asphalt, 70' away, and buried the rear wheels in the sand as deep
as i could get them, the put it in 4WH to get the front wheels buried a bit, to anchor it.
set the parking brake, and hooked a choker around the left front rim, with a clevice to my winch
line. there is NOTHING to hook onto on a new mustang except the rim. zero. the entire underbelly
has a ABS air management plate.

so, you'd have to pick with a tow trucks tire claws, or tie off to the rim, and see if you could cold
drag it.

it would not budge. zero.

but, the winch test portion of the program drug my jeep 5' with the wheels locked thru silt when
buried. didn't even flinch.

the winch works fine, the remote works fine, and is very convenient when trying to do this solo,
and as long as it doesn't stop working, i'm pretty satisfied with the whole thing.

and the dragon near where the thing was stuck was cool, as well.

Did you have a snatch block? Would have been interesting to see if it would have moved using that pole in the concrete supporting the Dragon's head. So, did you leave them there and call for help since it wouldn't budge?

they were fully connected, documenting the entire thing on instagram.
i, and another guy who stopped by in a jeep, and who brought a shovel
to the party, couldn't get it to move. we worked on it for 30 minutes.

he had traction plates, but in a quiet moment, explained he didn't
want to bury the plates under the sad mustang, and not be able to
leave with them if it didn't work. i tended to agree.

unless the guy with the second jeep was willing to lash off behind me, and
anchor me, all the snatch block will accomplish is to let me drag my jeep
at half the speed that i was dragging it at without the block.

the milleniels had, water, cellphone service, and a major credit card. go with god.
i'd bet the nearest tow truck was 25 miles from there, in juilian,
or 20 miles, in ocotillo wells.

on saturday night? this may prove an expensive experience.

on an interesting winch related note, i went out to the jeep, just now,
put it in the street, pulled off all the winch rope, attached to the hitch
on my work van, backed up till it was tight, shifted into neutral, got out,
and went to wind up the rope under the slight tension of pulling the
jeep on level ground. the rope had gotten a bit wadded up tugging sat.
night, and i wanted to straighten it out.

vehicle in neutral, engine off, nobody in the seat. won't work.
vehicle automatically goes into park with nobody in the drivers seat.
rear wheels lock and won't roll.

you have to be in the seat to roll. wtf? how would you tow the vehicle?

I remember reading on here that if you fasten the seat belt, it will disable the auto park feature. I would give that a try next time. Buckle it behind you before you get out.

When I was reading the manual, there was a section where you pry up this piece between the dash and the shifter. Once open there is a cable that you pull to be able to tow the Jeep. I don't remember the page, but look in the manual.

Ugh, yeah - auto-Park at its best. Either connect your seatbelt behind you before you get out, or put the transfer case in N and the transmission in P...

Something that might be of use when considering a Zeon vs a Zeon Platinum is that there is no manual clutch engagement lever on the Platinum. If the remote dies, or won't work, then you can't do anything to spool the cable in or out.

I know this because I installed a Platinum in a bumper on a truck and when I got ready to install the winch rope, the winch wouldn't do anything. Very, very frustrating to say the least. lol

I have a Zeon on my personal JK and it has been a great winch. I will have a Zeon 10S on my JLUR as well.

Hope this is helpful!

I thought you could plug the remote into the usb port and it will work right away.
