So I received my Warn D Ring Recovery and High Lift Jack Points for my OEM steel bumpers earlier in the week and after painting them red decided to tackle the installation. I had read the installation guide prior to purchasing and knew I was in for some work with cutting of the bumper required but I had no idea this was going to be such a pain in the a__ process.

The directions were vague at best. If I would have known how difficult it would be to mount the Recovery Points to the frame I would have reconsidered tackling this. First and foremost the hardware provided by Warn did not match the parts list. I think they mistakenly packed the winch plate hardware vs the D ring recovery pack. I had to go buy all of my own hardware using the parts list as a reference. Secondly the frame is a tube style design where these RPs mount and there is no easy access to the backside of the three bolting points and almost none to the lowest in the front. Also if you drop any hardware inside during assembly you’d better have a magnetic recovery tool or you’ll have hardware rattling around inside the frame until the end of time (I created a little fishing line out of duct tape that I stuck to the head of the bolts to help fish them down into the proper location without losing them). The directions are extremely vague in mounting of the actual RPs but detailed in regards to breakdown of the Jeep. Lastly the directions do not provide demensions for the area of steel bumper to be removed leaving you to eyeball it.

All of that said after lots of cussing and trips to Lowe’s I was able to get everything broken down, the RPs mounted, the steel bumper cut, and everything reassembled without damage. I used a saws all and jig saw with steel blades to cut the bumper. Drilled the inside corner in order to provide an access point to the jig saw to make the front edge cut.

I had initially painted the RPs completely red wanting the points sticking out below the bumper to match the hooks and general color scheme of my Jeep. However I quickly realized that the majority of the mounting frame of the RPs is exposed to view especially if running a stubby bumper. Therefore I painted the area back of the bumper black after mounting. I also trimmed the back corner of the upper plate due to concerns with clearance when my 37 x 12.5 tires are fully stuffed and the sway bar disconnected. Not certain this was required but figured it a prudent move since I already had all of my cutting tools and paint out anyway.

At the end of the day I like the look of the RPs and I like the piece of mind they provide that I have an adequate high lift jack point in the front when wheeling. Just know your getting into some rough work if you decide to go the same route.

I need to add that at the same time I posted (#3 above) I wrote to Warn to ask for the installation guide....they replied almost immediately with the guide attached as a pdf to their mail.
Warn: great customer support , thank you

Update.
Well I have a Rubicon which in the uk doesn’t have a the same factory bumper as the USA. I have installed the mopar Rubicon bumper. Shockingly it’s not similar to the factory Rubicon bumper.
Once I’d made a few trips to various places to get the sockets, paint etc I was ready to go.
Removing the bumper was ok but it was hard to get to the inner bolts

so bumper off.
Next issue was that the DRing bracket required a hole drilled. But before that, the instal guide shows that there needs some cutting of the bumper.
Now that it was off, I could see that with the DRing in place, that if I cut the bumper then it would mean that I couldn’t put the skid plate back, as there are 7 bolts holding the skid plate on, and 5 of those were to the bumper.
So here’s a warning....the mopar bumper is not factory oem spec and can’t be used with the warn d ring mount.

now I still need to find a d ring mount , so I can use front shackles . Ideas.

I marked here where the cut out on one side was needed. You’ll see an aluminium clip ... there are 5, I’ve indicated one with the arrow. Note you’d lose one each side.

Ok. Now I think that the bumper is “probably” similar to the factory OEM. However, I really didn’t the way one needs to cut out where the mount meets to bumper and skid pan. Looks really very hit and miss.
I wrote to Maximus-3 and got a response immediately which impressed me. Their fitting instructions are so much better...clear and precise. I went ahead and ordered their mounts....they do ship. I’m guessing that uk customs will add another 20% duty so it’s certainly not a cheap option.
One thing really made the decision. That is because when cutting the bumper and skid pan, the bolts that are used to connect the two are not compromised. With the Warn you lose the outer two of the front five.

Thought I would post my experience here too on my 2021. I installed the Warn D ring recovery points and the Warn winch plate all at the same time. Remove bumper once. I will say installing the warn D ring recovery points was pretty easy. Be sure to remove the two bolts holding the little skid plate mounting point from the bottom of each frame rail. That opens up for getting bolts and tools inside too for installing the recovery point. Cutting out the bumper requires time and patience. I found after cutting out the large square as the instructions showed a narrower piece could be cut out to make room for the d ring attachment portion of the mount. It took a lot of holding bumper up and checking clearances to get it right. I used sawzall, jig saw and 4” angle grinder to get the job done. Each tool had their part. The OEM skid plate will go back on and also needs small notch cut out to fit around recovery point that sticks below bumper. That’s this weekends project.

It was. Got everything ripped out and 1 installed on passenger side and this is what I had. Lol. Well 1st time I ordered I think they played soccer with the box parts were damaged and nicked. So 2nd time just checked the condition and was better. Took them to powder coat and tried to install. Well got 2 drivers side brackets. So will eat the cost of powder coating. Noting on my Jeep will ever be Warn again.

I do like the look. Maximus makes them as well. Might look into those. Who knows after I calm down might try again down the road.
