I think I've searched and found other related topics but not this specificly. I have the premium soft top on a JLU. With any combination of windows down and over 70 mph, the back around the rear sub makes a loud flapping / ratteling sound. Could even be the rear window. As soon as the window(s) go up it stops. No problems 0-68 mph.

I would think it has to do with same experience as when the rear windows are down in a car. Pulsating throbbing vortext effect.

My question is does anyone else experience this?

Maybe it's just aerodynamics and physics?

I just like riding with windows down in the low humidity and sometimes it not as feasible to take the top off.

Just curious if it's just me or perhaps theres a fix with dynomat on all the plastic or something.

Maybe I need to see exactly where the sound is coming with a helper.

I have noticed the same, I believe the rattling sound is coming from the small cross supports on the soft top - havent found anything that helps.

Same boat, is either one of the top crossbars or the bottom one on the rear that makes a rattling noise, i think is a top one.

I have the same issue. Took it to the dealer twice. First time they said they didn't hear anything, even though I told them you have to have the windows down going above 50 mph. The second time they said they heard it, said it was something in on rear passenger door, and said they added some foam to make it stop. Next time I roll down the windows there was just as much rattle as ever! I may have to try my luck at another dealer.

Look up under the top rear crossbar. There's a flexible wire/tube there (can't remember what for) that's supposed to be zip tied to the crossbar. The zip tie can slide sideways and create opportunity for the wire/tube to slap against the bar. Loud as s***. Move the zip tie back or add another and the sound is gone.

Thank you

Haha I saw that today and thought I bet that's it and the little clip had come out of the hole that alligned the wire to the cross bar, I put it back and drove for seveal miles without noise and said to self "I'd like to contribute back to the community with this find". Then the noise came back.

But it did stop and I thought let me tie wrap it.

I think you right. I'll report back when I get home from out of town.

Oh, yeah. Now I remember that too. It's not a zip tie, but one of those would work better.

I just started noticing this rattle too! It definitely is annoying. But mine rattles even on city streets going 30mph. I came to the forum now to see if anyone had posted about it, and I may have stumbled at the right place. Gonna check out some of the suggestions above. But to answer your point, it's a different, more uncomfortable type of noisy. And mine is right in my left ear, so it's hard to ignore. Could I certainly put up with it? Yup. Will my wife constantly remind me of the noise when she's in the Jeep? Yup.

@ZonaJP yes nosier for sure but not loud by any means. Actually I saw some DB levels measurements and the softtop was only slightly louder than the hard. I live in GA so the top can come off 9 months a year so no need for hardtop.

But this noise is like holding a power cord out the window and having it whip the side of the Jeep. Its not a normal noise. As soon as I tire wrap that cable coming down the cross member I'm sure the issue will be resolved.

I hope that works! Yeah i'm in AZ, so the top can come off some parts of the year, but other parts it's either way too hot and uncomfortable, or a bit too cold to really be comfortable (wife isn't a big fan of the wind when it's "cold" in AZ) - and with a young kid and expecting a 2nd, the top isn't come off much anyway - so i went with a hardtop

Ok a bit of an update. I did the zip tie the passenger side cable and drove home. I think the cable goes to the rear release for the soft top. Anyways, the beating/ rattling held off for a minute but that could have been because the radio was turned up and I didn't hear the noise. However, the noise was back at 69+ MPH. When i got home I check the cable and its still secure all the way around the cross bar and all the clips are in place.

I then noticed the driver side window didn't have any play where you insert the top of the windows into the roof. After looking, I somehow pushed part of the softop into the gap where you insert the window. So I replicated that on the passenger side and its much tighter now. I will drive today or this weekend and see if that stops the jackhammer noise.

When I lift the rear flap I can see the air gap now where the fabric is folded up but then its covered backup with the rear lip flap.

If the noise is gone I'll try to put a damping filler in the gap another way.

Gap if I lift the rear overhand from outside looking in:

Fabric tucked in with side window inserted:

Ok shoving the softtop flap in between the post and the top fixed 90% of the noise. I can no listen to the radio. There is a metal slapping sound which might be the seat belt or the cable that released the top. The problem is getting the wife or teen son to drive while I sit in the back to isolate.

To recap the passenger side soft top window is really loose as compared to the driver so I used part of the soft top to fill the gap. Maybe I can figure something else to fill the gap like increasing the size of the tap on the top of the window.
