It's been done. There was a CJ-5 hardtop years ago with a "garage door" style rear window:

A good way to do a removable rear window is to make it like a half door - just like half doors have removable uppers, a tailgate can have a removable upper. The additional benefit of that approach is that the tailgate + upper swings as one piece, you don't have the two-step open the hatch then open the tailgate operation.

This is a hard upper version in action on the JKU:

Here's a hard upper on my LJ, this one removes easily by removing a few nuts.

There's also a soft version, it's installed in these next photos:

Something like these could be done for the JL. I don't have a JL so I haven't done one, I've only built them for the JK/JKU and the TJ/LJ.
that is genius!!!

I’ve been driving a JK with half doors for 13 years and never thought of that...

I love that idea đź’ˇ. Add an upper half to the tailgate. Simple and proven. Genius. Never occurred to me.

I built the first one 11 years ago when I had a soft top on my LJ. It was such a pain to access the rear cargo area, especially in the rain or snow, that I thought there had to be a better idea. So I designed a fairly simple upper frame that mounted to the tailgate and modified a factory soft top rear window to mount to it. It worked out very well, it didn't leak and it eliminated fussing with zippers. After that one proved successful I built one for the LJ hardtop and when I got the JKU I built both hard and soft uppers for that one. I can never go back to a zipper soft top window or a glass liftgate.

I would love a slider, my dog rides in the back in a crate and it would be great to have a window I could slide open a bit to get him some air circulation.

Such creative ideas. @JeepCares are you listening? :)

Problem:
- Rear window not removable on sky one touch top (in particular wanted when used with half doors)
- Access to cargo area not ideal with the flip up rear window

Creative solutions:
- Rear window that slides up and into Jeep
- Rear window that is attached to tailgate, opens with tailgate, and can be detached from tailgate and stored in trunk

It would be nice if the Freedom panels have hinges connecting to the main hard top and act like a bifold hard tonneau cover. Basically become like a hard Sunrider top. It would of course require a design change on the hard top so it has a straight cut instead of an angular one.
