That is so completely unacceptable. Seems a halfway decent dealership should replace the head unit for you. Are you going to try to get that done?
Yeah, now that the manual trans recall should be ready I will try to kill two birds with one stone. I am going to call for an appointment this week.

Here's my update: I've now been driving around for four straight weeks with a non-functional radio and no backup camera.

I sent selfies of myself driving with AirPods in to two different dealers to remind them that I have an issue. One of the dealers says that they ordered me a new head unit and it should be in "any day now" but I know from reading everyone else's posts that it's maybe 50/50 at best that this works....and that's if they ever bother to get it in and change it.

Has anyone had any success changing to a different head unit? I had a local car audio place start working on a quote for that fancy Stinger system. I'm not opposed to spending the money to get something else working if I know for sure it'll work. Better than letting dealers jerk me around for months....even years....like some of the cases reported here. But is the Uconnect software isolated to just the head unit or is it a bigger problem than that?

Of course, if I have to pay out of pocket to have this fixed, I'm trading it in for something totally different and never buying a Jeep or any Chrysler product again. Pretty depressing since i have my brand new tube doors sitting in the garage ready to go for summer.

Much like Scott and Jerry, mine is a 2018. I custom ordered it sometime maybe in April and it was delivered end of May.

IMHO before spending your own money to fix I would investigate FCA’s arbitration process. It seems to be relatively quick.

First step is to call Chrysler customer service, not uconnect customer service. Chrysler customer service will open a new case and that case is needed to work through arbitration.

Second step is to contact the third party body that manages arbitration (www.ncdsusa.org). Chrysler customer service gave me their phone number and told me how to proceed.

Once you connect with NCDS and give them the information they will get back to you within a few days to tell you if they will take the case. If they do take the case then it’s something like four weeks and the ruling is binding to Chrysler but it is not binding to the vehicle owner.

It’s free, but you will probably lose two months from start to finish and no guarantee it will solve the issue.

Had mine replaced a few months ago. Took several weeks to get a new 8.4 head unit in. Apparently, rather than giving me the latest and greatest model, they're only authorized to replace with a refurbished unit, in my case from my model year 2018 as well.

That is soooo hard to see the logic. What’s that saying about insanity? Repeating the same actions over again and expecting different results???

Thanks for that tip. I’ve seen that cause issues for sure. However in this case the behavior is consistent with many phones. In fact the service manager told me that the radio crashes with everybody’s iPhone that works at the dealership! I purchased a brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max and held the ios at 14.2 to hopefully solve the problem and it crashed within 30 minutes.

I think what’s happening here is that it is a early 2018 Jeep and there was or is a software bug in the radio unit. I suspect they solved in future versions in 2018 and BeyondMenu Npd but never went back to fix the early models.

I think Chrysler know this and is choosing to do nothing about it.
Part of the problem is that FCA half assed the uConnect environment for years. uConnect 4 was a huge improvement and brought CarPlay and Android auto support but it’s obviously still buggy.

uConnect 5 just started rolling out and is entirely based on the Android Automotive OS. Stellantis has also expanded the dev team. I predictthings will get much better but I don’t think the Wrangler will see the new system until the mid cycle refresh, which I speculate will be the 2023 model year.

My Jeep is 1 week old and I have no climate control and lost rear camera guide lines. Disconnect Pwr. and all was restored for 1- day. I agree, U connect is unimpressive. I’m concern what the real cost will be after the 3- year warranty is up.

I'm willing to bet they have so many refurbished units sitting around that they're trying to clear their inventory, probably figuring the defect was permanently fixed. Of course time will tell if they truly figured out how to fix the hardware during the refurb process. I bet FCA is hoping if the unit does fail again, it will be out of the warranty period by then.

UPDATE: I took care of my problem yesterday. Was pretty simple, really. I drove to the closest Land Rover dealer and ordered a Defender. To hell with Chrysler, Jeep, @JeepCares, Uconnect, and every one of those dealers that didn't bother to fix my vehicle.

Going to pay a local shop to install an aftermarket head unit while I wait for my Rover, then I'll never have to deal with anyone from Jeep/Chrysler ever again.

Are you keeping the Jeep or trading it in for the Defender?

Hey Andy,

We're sorry to hear about your dealer experience. We tried reaching out to you but it must have missed you. If you'd like to work with your Jeep dealer to get this fixed, I'd be more than happy to get you connected with a Case Specialist to assist throughout the process.

Just let us know!

Thanks,

Courtney

I haven't seen a single person suggest that you guys did anything to actually help them. And I'm way past wanting to work it out with anyone at either dealership at this point.
