I started our trip journal here before I realized there was a forum just for that purpose.
https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...ra-is-built-and-hitting-the-road.72660/page-2

Going to and at Glacier National Park…and one urgent care visit for a foot because Croc’s are appropriate footwear for navigating slippery river rock. :(

You can still see smoke in the air though the day before I was told you couldn’t see 5 ft in front of you.

The smoke definitely knocked it down a few spots on our favorite places we visited. We plan to return another year. The kid is doing ok. She’ll be taking a break from using it like she usually does for a while.

The Magruder Corridor/Nez Perce Trail Road-

I don’t have as many pics of this portion of our travels but I was busier driving as we had to make decent time to finish before dark. Dividing the trail into fourths, the second 1/4 was the most intense in regards to narrow shelf roads and very few turnouts to allow oncoming traffic by. We only encountered one Land Rover and 3 or 4 atv’s on the 100+ mile road though there were campers and eventually horse trailer pulling trucks up there parked along the road sporadically as well. The last 30 or so miles is maintained gravel roads and even some asphalt in the middle of the last section oddly. I think it was from a defunct project decades ago which is apparent because some of the asphalt is slowly making it’s way toward going over the side of the shelf.

There were a couple of pucker moments during the second 1/4 of the road for me but my wife was absolutely not pleased with it…at all. She couldn’t even enjoy it. And Burnt Knob…the road going up is considerably worse off than the videos I’ve seen which, understandably, can change over the course of 3-5 years when those videos were made.

On Burnt Knob my wife had to get out. She refused to continue on. She got out of the Rubicon with my son and walked back down. My 17 yo daughter had to continue driving up crawling over a few 12”+ rocks, ruts, and other large rocks to get to the turnout, following me, and she went back down all on her own. I later asked if she scraped anywhere and she said she didn’t. She did great!

I wanted to go the last 20% of the way to the top but I didn’t feel like I should leave them down the trail any longer than necessary and really wanted to share that moment with everyone so it didn’t feel right to continue. I was concerned about animals etc but she insisted on getting out of the Jeep anyway. She was paralyzed from a driving standpoint. We never saw one large animal outside of one deer. Chipmunks and squirrels were everywhere though.

I got a little more practice with and used hill descent control and slowly came back down using the shifter in manual to raise or lower the speed between .6 and up to 5 mph as needed. It took me about 15 mins to come back down. My daughter made it down much more quickly and since they were back in the Jeep, I just took my time getting mine back down nice and easy.

My wife just didn’t like the very rough and technical nature of the road up to Burnt Knob. It being jostling, it made her feel like…she might fall off the side of the road and roll down the hill. There was no trying to reason with her that was next to impossible without meaning to or trying to go very fast over those rocks and losing control. I didn’t even try that tactic because she was shook up too much. It’s weird though. Later through Rocky Mountain National Park, she said she was fine with no rail guards, narrow asphalt shelf roads with no trees to catch you, coming over hills seeing only sky for a moment as I’m trying to pull myself up to see over the hood…and she said she was ok with that. lol Those roads had me wound up a little. Obviously not paralyzing though. lol We figured out she likes SMOOTH asphalt and feels secure and I like WALLS or something to cling to psychologically. It’s funny how the mind works. Those things make us feel safer whether they actually help or not.

Honestly, I enjoyed the Magruder overall. It felt like an accomplishment for us pushing our envelopes of what we’re comfortable with as unpleasant as those isolated moments were. I’m glad we did it and I’m proud of my wife for pushing through and my daughter for stepping up her off-road game and doing so undramatically.

Here’s the few pics we gathered up.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Sounds like a great trip and very nice photos of your trek. Our upcoming BOH trip in the San Juans a couple weeks away and am concerned about how my wife will handle the heights and narrow shelves. Hopefully she'll stay in the vehicle, but ???

Make sure to share your pics and experience!

Being flatlanders or hill dwellers (lol) all of our lives, it was definitely a new experience in non hwy/interstate travel through the mountains.

Another odd thing, she better tolerates being next to a handrail outside the top of a lighthouse or at the top of Sears tower etc by the windows lol. I’m good being backed away. There was a guy in a FB group I’m in and he went to Top off the World in Moab. He laid down face forward to peek over the edge. I told him that’s my general rule of thumb. As tall as I am, that’s just about how far back I want to be. No tripping concerns I guess…which isn’t an issue for me lol. Those hanging their legs off. Nope. I don’t trust myself. Especially getting a little older.

Nice read and great pictures. I love Glacier National Park. I love the beauty of the park and hope to be there again in July of 22. While I have been there. my wife has not. when my youngest son graduated from High School, we took a 30 day motorcycle trip around the US and Glacier was one of the places we visited. My wife did not join us until we rode down the west coast. I have been trying to get my wife to Glaicer ever since so she can lay her own eyes on the magnificent beauty of the park.

One of the guys that wheel with us often is terrified of heights and can not drive on the higher elevation shelf roads. Someone will jump in his Jeep and drive it for him. He has to sit in the passenger seat and put a magazine over his face so he can't see out the windows. So I understand what its like having a passenger that is freaked out. We have nicknamed my bud as Gulch and who ever is driving at the higher elevations, we call them Pass.

I think it is very cool that you took two Jeeps and went exploring some of the most beautiful parts of the country in my eyes. If you have more pictures, please share so I can live that area through your camera and your vision of what was worthy of being photographed.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks and you’re welcome.

I hope when you guys go that there’s no smoke. It was very beautiful but obscured a little. If we didn’t have a 10 month old, a hike would have been great.

I’m appreciative I’m not paralyzed by the heights and think our tolerance can be built up even better. My wife got better as she did more shelf roads but her limit was definitely reached that day unfortunately.

I wish I got more pictures and had more time. I think our schedule was too ambitious and we were rushed at times. I have about a terabyte of 4K video. My old laptop died recently so I’m going to replace it and get Davinci Resolve editing software more than likely to edit it. That will be a learning process.

Leaving the Magruder Corridor we went to our mini cabin. Then the next day we made our way to Wally’s Cafe in Salmon, Idaho for breakfast and then to Beaver Creek Campground NW of West Yellowstone. The contrast between destinations one of my favorite aspects of travel.

If it wasn’t for my wife, I’d have no still shots. I have video but I’m going to buy a laptop for video editing in the next couple of weeks and some software to do it.

Here we went from the Wind River Range west of Lander, WY to the desert south of the mountains. Seeing the wild horses were the best part of this section. At one point the herd was running right at us, kicking up dirt…like a movie or maybe a Mustang commercial. I was trying to radio them behind me to get the shot (they had the better camera) while I’m scrambling to remove my Action Camera from the holder and get it going. By the time I did the herd changed direction. I don’t think anyone got the shot so I’ll just have to remember that one. Out of the 80 miles of desert we went through, the first 30 or so were the best. That’s where the buttes, wild horses, and sparse Antelope were. Man those things are fast! They kept their distance.

The last 50 were a mix of two track and gravel roads without much to look at besides a blonde prairie dog with a short white tail and the occasional horse or cattle. It turned into just hurrying to the interstate and civilization.

The biggest obstacle we went through in the desert was a narrow washout. You might hear my Maximus-3 right side tow point hit the dirt. Scuffed the bumper and pushed the plastic corner into the tub. (That might be the sound heard.) No dent but it did transfer some plastic. Flaked the small bit of plastic right off. Maybe I should’ve had the front end turned left relative to the ditch a bit more because the wife on 33’s didn’t seem to hit it…or I clearanced it for her. lol

The bottom of the wash seemed dry when I got out to inspect and stomp on it but didn’t dig to check. It had also been dry in the region for a while, thus the fire bans. I hadn’t crossed anything this abrupt before and felt a little momentum just before the bottom might be a good thing. Although now, watching the video, I’m saying slow down a little to myself.
