FCA is pushing turbos because it increases their fuel economy averages, which of course for the owner is negated by the premium octane requirements. FCA also has to sell all the turbos they committed to from the supplier.

Many high end cars today are turbo. While there’s nothing *wrong* with the 3.6 it’s very old technology. It’s not even direct injected which has been in use at least 13 years. Turbo is modern day tech with a lot of
performance benefits. My money was spent on the 2.0T. I owned a BMW 335 and it was awesome, so the 3.6 wasn’t even considered. To those that choose the 3.6 out of fear - you’re missing out.
More like missing out on expensive gas and another $1k. No thanks.

So with 87, what kind of mileage can one expect with the Rubi on the factory 33s?
Prob around 20ish, but as usual, depends on your foot. Check out the turbo section and there are a few posts discussing mpg on both 87 and 91.

The turbo is the performance choice and is underrated by Jeep. A lot of manufacturers have 2.0 liter turbo options and the one in the wrangler is very similar to the 2.0 that Alfa uses. It isn’t the 80s anymore, turbos are proven technology. eTorque is pretty new, but Jeep is adding that to the Pentastar soon so both will have that included.

Below is 2.0 vs 3.6 on the same dyno.

Impressive, off-idle the 3.6 has ~60% more torque than the 2.0

Shamelessly snagged from the turbo section...

87 required, 91 recommended. If you want to use 87 on the turbo, you'll be just fine. If you want that little extra power and mpg, go for it.

I might have seriously considered the 2.0l if they offered the 6 MT, but they don't however, so I just yesterday ordered my Rubi with the 3.6l 6MT. It kind of sucks that they force you one way with options, but I know it's big business.

I have 2500 miles on my 2.0 turbo Sahara and really like it. Getting just above 23 MPH with 87 octane. I bough the turbo because it is what they had available. You'll be in a stronger negotiating positioning buying what they have on the lot.

People seem to be getting much better deals ordering over buying off the lot. 23 mpg is just plain awesome. Enjoy!

That’s absolutely not true on a new vehicle. Ordering does not affect dealership stock and they have nothing invested in the vehicle when you order it. Nobody is getting the deals that custom orders do off of the lot.

I have this discussion anytime the topic of a “premium recommended” engine choice comes up. If you buy a premium fueled engine, but plan on using 87, and economy, power and torque suffers, it’s probably best to stick with the engine that was actually designed to use 87.
I’m personally not a fan of using 87 in lieu of 91 as the way the engine knows what fuel you’re using is by the knock sensor getting set off.

Otherwise, switching to 87 from 91 should only be done if you got laid off right after buying a new Jeep.

We have 93 here. Every car I've ever owned required premium fuel so not a problem for me

Every rubicon in a 100 mile radius (parts of NJ,PA,Delawre) from my Zip all have turbo in them. is this the same everywhere else or just my area. Also does anyone know why are they just trying to push rubi turbo or is the turbo that good?

I ask cause I'm in the market and me building(ordering) or buying off the lot is as simple as I'm on the edge with the turbo.
I recommend ordering at a dealer in the DC/MD/VA area. A lot of them offer under invoice pricing. I ordered from a dealer in MD and saved about 13% off the MSRP. Definitely worth the 6 hour drive to save that much money.
