TSB 08-074-20: does this Steering TSB apply to every single 2018 to 2020 JL/JT out there? Dealer refuses service stating that his test drive shows ok.

This is regarding the Steering TSB that was issued in August of 2020. I notice the following in my 2020 JLUR. But dealer's technician claims he is unable to reproduce my symptoms during this test drive. My symptoms are the following esp on the Highway:

1. Dead zone between the 11 o'clock and the 1 o'clock positions.

2. Steering needs to be corrected a lot more frequently versus my 09 Civic Sedan or 2011 Pathfinder.

3. Steering tends to veer to the right.

Dealer claims that this TSB does not apply to me as his test drive reveals no such thing but he still checked out my EPM just to be safe. Am I being BS'd or could be that this steering TSB does not apply to all 2018 to 2020 JL/JT models? I did not make a big scene at the dealership when I had to go pick up my Jeep because I just wanted to be sure that I am not being unnecessarily difficult.

@JeepCares the dealership was Westbury Jeep on Long Island. I bought my JLUR from them. Overall positive experience with them. This was a first negative.

Yes. Tell them word for word that your symptoms are what the TSB states. Tell them it gets worse in hot weather, and contact JeepCares.

HOWEVER.

Your steering is not going to get much better, that’s just how these things drive. Your vehicles you compare to have no similarity in design at all.

Going to call them again tomorrow and ask for an escalation. Simply unacceptable dealer behavior. He did the oil change and tire rotation and sent me on my way.

I had to fight my dealership every step of the way to get it done. Nowhere in the procedure does it say “test drive to confirm”. It says scan for codes, confirm none exist, perform repair.

Given the fact that it doesn’t get much better after getting the steering fixed, do you think this is something worth fighting for or should I just count my losses and live with it?

I’d say it’s worth it just because the aluminum box has been specifically identified as a material problem. Who knows what the longevity of the “good ones” are.

Definitely worth the fight. I cannot overstate the difference in driveability since the replacement of the steering box. I almost accepted the notion that this was a "jeep thing", but turns out that this rig drives as nice as any 4WD I have owned. Not so for the first 22K miles, as it felt like I was driving on beach balls. Worth noting that I did not have a dead spot, but it was exhausting to drive!
Our dealership simply performed the service based on the TSB and my explanation that the vehicle was difficult to drive. No test drive, no questions. Just performed the service. I'd suggest contacting another dealership.

My first line of contact will now be @JeepCares

not the first time I got sent for a ride by my dealership when it comes to this TSB. This dealership is considered one of the best on Long Island/NYC area (Westbury Jeep). If this is the behavior of the best then I dont even want to know how the bad ones will be able to support me.

Hi @631_Islander,

The TSB applies to all 2018-2020 JL Wrangler & JT vehicles. We would be happy to connect you with a case specialist to provide additional support while in service. Please send our team a private message to get started.

Update as of March 5th, 2021: Thanks to the customer support from @JeepCares and better dealership recommendation from @Headbarcode I finally got Empire CJDR in West Islip, NY to order parts for me. Although they were easier to work with versus Wesbury Jeep, it was still not a 100% smooth experience. But they overall did a much better job and did not horse around with me as much as Westbury Jeep did. I got a little scared when I found out that @1quick1 was being horsed around by multiple dealers since September. But I guess having a factory stock Jeep like mine makes a difference versus one laden with mods.

My parts are being expedited and will arrive at the dealership within late next week. Once the parts arrive, they will call me and set up an appointment. Check out below screenshot. Thanks again to the support and guidance @JeepCares and @Headbarcode.

Glad to hear the great news! And having it sped up to next week versus "many weeks" is a happy bonus.

Cheers, neighbor!

Check out my phone screenshot from earlier. Funny they ordered everything except for 68088485AB (Electric Steering Pump Fluid). I am going to give them the benefit of doubt and assume they probably got plenty of power steering fluid in house and hence did not need to order extra. Thoughts?

Oh yeah, that's right. I looked at it to make sure that all 5 bolts were ordered with the box, but forgot about the fluid. May be worth a call tomorrow, just to make sure they have it on hand.

Guess I will call Monday. But I am pretty sure a shop should have Power Steering Fluid. But then again, Jeep Dealership mechanics never cease to amaze me.
