My dad and I are in the midst of planning a 3 week trip from VA to UT, where we'll be in Moab for 5 days and zion for 4.

I've got a pretty good handle in the trails in each place, but what about a scenic way to get between the two? Any trails, byways, or just good routes we should take? We're planning one night in between so it gives some time to enjoy the ride.

Thanks in advance!

If you're not in a hurry between Moab and Zion, you can get off I-70 on State Hwy 24 and make a detour to Capitol Reef NP. Off the beaten path and definitely worth the time and miles. Very scenic and lots of wildlife.

When you take a long cross country trip like that so far from home, you have to figure that chances are high that you may not get back there again, so see all you can while you're there.

Here is a nice little side trip while you are in Zion. Doesn't take too much time but great place to visit. Road is cratered to keep out cars but Jeeps and 4x4 pickups should have no issues.

If you can afford to make it a days drive I would drop south and come up 95 and then cross over to 12 (https://www.visitutah.com/articles/the-all-american-road-scenic-byway-12) and take the scenic way into Zion through the East tunnel. There is an awesome side road to take (Burr Trail) but it may add too much time.

dapipp,

That's the exact route I've been looking at, so glad to see it'll be worth it. I was looking to spend a night in Torrey so we can enjoy the scenic drive. Thanks!

Went the opposite direction with a variation a number of years ago.

Camped east of Escalante off Hole In the Rock Rd.
Turned off the highway in Boulder and went thru Grand Staircase Escalante. Down the switchbacks and took the dirt road around the southside of the Henry Mtn before joining the highway to head up through Hanksville and beelining to Moab via I-70.

I haven't been down 12 but I do prefer 89 to I-15. Much Better scenery and it is a relaxing drive. Might Try to do west rim trail at sand hollow if you have time.

We ventured into Capital Reef on a whim, with our Tahoe. First bring extra gas!! We got on the trails around noon and found much needed gas at 9pm. When the fuel light came on, just as we were getting off the two track in the sand and onto the gravel road, about 40 miles from gas, my nerves got a little frayed. The trail was loads of fun and the stops along the way to take pictures were amazing. The only other folks we saw were three guys over-landing with motor cycles. We didn't realize just how far from civilization we had gotten.
