In California we had a great trail guide (book) that you could keep in the vehicle, as well as having a bit of information about the trails and area history, points of interest etc. I know there are good websites (would like to hear about them as well) as well as access to topo maps but would like to see if anyone has a lead on books similar to these > https://funtreks.com/product/guide-california-backroads-4-wheel-drive-trails/
Being into orienteering and wayfinding I like to have a back up in the vehicle (plus wife is a teacher) and not totally rely on mobile phone or gps etc.
Thanks!
