Track bar sheared off at the weld. I feel like I’m cursed with my new JL

How do they fix something like this? Can it just be welded back on?
It looks to me in the OP’s pictures that the bracket did not get welded to the outside of the frame. But other people’s pictures clearly show a weld there.

I looked underneath to get ready to install my lift kit. And saw these welds. I took it to the nearest dealership, and the service guy almost crapped his pants. I have an appointment to come back on Monday. When he thought this was an isolated issue, I showed him several threads from this forum, and he got really concerned. So we will see what happens Monday.

Sorry, but consumers shouldn't have to go out and check their welds to make sure their $50K Jeep is safe.
Totally agree. However when you hear a story like this, it makes you want to go look just in case and it's easy enough to do. Nobody told me I had to besides myself. Nothing to be sorry about.

Well crap... I thought the single bad weld story I read was a very isolated incident. Now I guess not. Definitely hope it's completely resolved before I get my Jeep.

Heck, I am looking at the welds on Wranglers on the dealer lot.

You are correct. The weld around that track bar appears to have not penetrated into the bracket. Another thing I noticed is it appears to me that the frame was painted before the track bar bracket was welded on, as I think I see paint under where the bracket mounted. I have seen welding through paint cause pin holes in welds. http://www.hobartwelders.com/elearning/#mig

These frames are submerged in a tank to be coated, just like the JK frame.

Damn. Just went out and looked . Couple sketchy ones. This one is the worst on the frame side passenger control arm mount. Inside and outside of weld. Calling local dealer for appointment.

Thanks everyone. Still in disbelief with the situation. Dealer just sent some pics over.
Holy mother of shitty weld jobs! You can tell by the 3rd pic down showing the shear points that the weld was only connecting maybe 1/4 of the entire track bar arm to the frame.

Glad you're safe! That could have easily ended a lot uglier than it did.

I appreciate the reply. Mine looks okay, not great. It's welded on both sides. It doesn't wander at all down the road. Had a friend turn the wheel back and forth while I checked and no movement or flex. Definitely not a definitive exam, and certainly not the pounding it will take off road or even on road.but I don't have a case until I get a failure. FCA has a lot of lawyers and I don't. Until there's a recall or a failure with mine I don't really have anything to start a case with. I certainly can't start a case based on one other jeep on a forum having a failure. I guess I can go to a frame shop and have them check the weld. One of the first suggestions everyone makes for almost every issue on this forum is to make them buy your vehicle back. That sounds nice, but in reality not reasonable. They don't have to do buybacks under lemon laws unless you can prove yours is unsafe or the they were given multiple chances to fix a deficiency and didn't get it done. If they do a recall, they will check every sold jeep and make their decision on whether the welds are satisfactory or not. If not, they will re weld the bad welds and give you your jeep back. The only ones they will be buying are the ones they can't make right or the ones that end with an accident after a failure. I don't believe I should have to pay to fix anything under warranty, and is total bs, but my thinking was $200 or so to re weld it over before it cracks and moves is cheap peace of mind.
I agree your situation is a little different but if my Jl was affected like the OP I would do everything in my power to make them buy it back.

I just checked mine which was rebuilt 3/28 after my original one failed inspection. All of my welds around that area look perfect and all the welds on that side have been marked with a bright color marker. It looks like the weld issues are being addressed moving forward for those thinking about canceling. Unless they’ve been marking all those welds from the beginning.

Are all of these welds on the axle? Not certain but those welds are most likely completed by Dana, not Jeep. I believe the Jeep frames are made by Hyundai Mobis in the Ohio factory. Compare the axles welds to the frame welds to see if there is any quality difference. Dana might have a tighter QC process than Hyundai/Jeep.

That's right. YOUR JEEP IS MADE BY HYUNDAI.

Why did they not keep the Jeep and give you a loaner? I can't believe that let you drive off the lot again.
