Just let the Yankees think we pay hundreds of billions for a crappy system (as reported by FOX News). They like to think it can't be done in the USA. Meanwhile, we know it's quite good. ;)
Lived in Europe for a while and my dad was traveling back and forth from the states to France. He had a medical emergency in the little town he was living in. Took him 2 hours by ambulance, in the hospital for a week, 2 heart specialist (one was a surgeon) checking on him hourly and his "private" nurse (he said it was always the same girl everytime). Whole thing cost him 250 USD. Would have been nothing if his duel citizenship had gone through at that time. I don't understand why most of us down here are so scared of a single payer, universal system.

Glad you're all good though, you'll get another, patience is key. I hate waiting too.

You always wonder in something like this if the guy just wasn't paying attention and is claiming the brakes to save face or avoid a mess at work. Will the authorities be investigating the truck further or taking his word for it since nobody was killed or seriously injured?

Either way, it's good you are ok, and sucks about the Jeep.

My American coworker snapped her arm in London, relatively quick trip to the A&E (quicker than visiting the ER here anyway), wrapped up and sent off with some painkillers, and they billed her exactly $0 for the experience.

I'm not sure why we get so worried about it either. Even just being able to choose our own insurance would be a step in the right direction, rather than being stuck with the plans the company wants you to have.

America is a Republic and founded on limited federal intrusion. If a state votes for some sort of government run healthcare with the associated massive tax hikes, that's well within their authority per the 10th amendment.

I for one don't want the government involved in my healthcare. You don't trust the government, and neither do I.

And this is why we spend more money on healthcare than every other developed country in the world with worse outcomes. It's a ridiculously idiotic system that puts people in massive debt and kills others.

I echo the sentiment from the fellow Jeepers here and I'm glad you're doing well and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

In Florida your hospital bill would be covered plus a 6-7 figure settlement from the truck driver's insurance and a new Jeep.

Did you ever think of getting a new Jeep off the lot? I've never ordered a vehicle, always worked with the dealer's new inventory. I bought my wife's van with 1 mile on it. My Jeep had 25, not much can go horribly wrong in 25 miles.
Floridian here, all though I never been in a major accident myself. I have had family and friends who been. One was really bad and had to be life flighted. She was a broke full time employee for a certain rodent. Her medical bills was covered by her employer's health insurance and the deductible, plus some was covered by a portion of her auto insurance (not sure what part, it was a flat $10,000). Lost of income (not that there was very much of it) was covered by short and then long term disability insurance. Basically, no extra cost or billing on her part and she had some really great care... The very large settlement paid for her addiction to Oxy and sweet new Mustang, later sold for more Oxy.

But zero debt on her part! Glad the Ops okay and able to enjoy a new Jeep.

Well before you hit the talking points, lets start off with some questions that need answered. It's a complex topic.

Why is the cost of healthcare so high? I'm not talking about the cost of insurance, I'm talking about the cost of healthcare.

Finland is a republic. So is France. So is Germany. All with federal states. And yet, they all kick USA's butt when it comes to healthcare. Just say you don't want to pay for things that doesn't concern you instead of trying to intellectualize your egoism, that'd be a bit more true.

Because healthcare has become politicized, like everything else in this country.

Do they have a constitution with enumerated powers given to the federal government? Trying to compare the US of A to any other country just doesn't work because we are fundamentally different. We arent different because we are a Republic. We are different because of the genius of our constitution.

Yes, in all three cases. Most countries have constitutions. In Germany, it's called the Basic Law for the Federal Republic (let's not kid ourselves, it's a constitution).

You're not different because of the genius of your constitution. You're different because you're the only developed country who's still stubborn enough to not give yourself a proper healthcare system. At this point, I guess you don't even know why, anymore. It's just who you are. And it's perfectly fine.

We still love you guys with your imperfections. Never had as much fun as when I was on a trip to Colorado and Utah. That place is gorgeous...but my Blue Cross card was not very far.

Okay, enough about that.
JEEPS! JEEPS! JEEPS! JEEPS!

Gosh...it's not in my driveway anymore.

Every country believes it is “different.”

There’s no genius guaranteed in our constitution. The US became a superpower after WWII thanks to the genius of individual Americans who were willing to get an education, work hard to get ahead, and elect politicians with a genuine interest in governing and getting things done.

Unfortunately, the dysfunctional system we now have suits the healthcare industry just fine. While we bicker amongst ourselves on political ideology, they keep raking in the big profits and paying each other fat quarterly bonuses. All they have to do is keep feeding enough cash to the political parties to make sure that nothing gets done.

When you look from the outside at the the tangled mess our healthcare system has become, all you can do is scratch your head.
