2019 on 37's without lift. Did scrub lightly in the back with bumps. Fuel Anza Wheels so they poke further out than the stock. With the E i suspect it might be a bit tighter

I am about to purchase a new Rubicon 4xe from the dealership. I decided to go into my local America's Tire / Discount Tire store to see what they recommend for me with upgrading to a bigger size tire. The sales associate who helped me stated that I could not fit any bigger size tire onto the stock Rubicon wheels, and especially without getting a lift due to the fact that the tire would rub and could cause damage. Also stating that the stock wheels are too small width-wise for anything bigger, even went on saying that a 34s would rub too. His information is based on what their computer systems say.

I thought you could put a 35-inch size tire onto a stock Rubicon with no problem. Is what he is saying true? Like, I get the whole needing a lift thing. But I seriously thought that I could keep the stock wheels on the Jeep with no problems.

Maybe I should be just asking on here what size tire, lift, and new wheels should get for my new 4xe? Are 35s worth the small upgrade or should I just skip 35s and jump straight into 37s? I was planning on keeping the stock 33s on at first and seeing how far I can go with them while off-roading, but I thought since I would most likely upgrade anyways, might as well just do the upgrade right off of the bat and sell the brand new 33s to someone.
I think I'd find a shop that knew what they were doing 🤔

Depends on the shop. I did this at a local place and they agreed. When my wife tried at Costco we had to get a manager involved and sign a waiver.

Stock Rubi here with 315/70/17 tires that I have personally measured to be 33.5” on the rim, inflated and no weight on them. They tub at full stuff. Not a lot but they do rub.

Try some thinner tires. Toyo has the Open Country AT III's that should work on your wheels (LT35X11.5R17). They're website says they'll fit in 7.5" wife rims. I know the Kenda Klever RT 35X10.5R17 will fit fine. I put the Kenda Klever AT2 315X70R17 on my Rubi 4xe and it doesn't rub turning lock to lock. I haven't flexed the suspension with them yet, though.

Just as some ammo, I’m not sure which tires your looking at, but Discount’s own website lists the stock 7.5 as an approved rim width for the 35x12.50 KO2.

(Note, the BFG site says 8”)

They're wrong. Maybe they're thinking of a JK, but 35s will fit on any JL Rubicon just fine.
These wider tires are specced for 8" minimum wheels. The guys are right, they are not supposed to mount them.

That's fine, but they're claiming they'll rub which is incorrect.

Yeah, I was very disappointed in the sales rep's knowledge on the matter. He seemed like he understand what I was asking and felt very confident in his answer; especially with him saying that he has helped multiple other customers with Wranglers in the past. He didn't even want to help me pick out a tire at all. Told me to go on their website and pick out new wheels and tires after I lift the vehicle...

Here’s 39’s sold by and installed by Costco on stock 7.5” wide Rubicon wheels. Works great!
Edit: sorry I didn’t read the thread and thought it said won’t fit on the stock wheels. As far as rubbing, anything larger than stock a lot of times requires wheel spacers.

They are playing it safe with liability. America Tires did both my 2020 and 2021 JLURs with 35” tires on stock rims.

Echoing other comments based on first hand experience. Have 35s on OEM wheels, no lift when first installed and wheeled in this configuration (now have 1.5inch lift).

The sales associate who helped me stated that I could not fit any bigger size tire onto the stock Rubicon wheels...
Correct insofar as there are no 35x12.5r17 tires that "fit" on 17x7.5 wheels per manufacturer specs. Prize to anybody else who can cite any exception to this.

...and especially without getting a lift due to the fact that the tire would rub and could cause damage.
Absolutely not true with 35s on OEM 17inch wheels. Yes there will likely be slight rubbing at max flex but it would be hard to imagine causing any real damage unless you were also moving at high speed. High speed at max flex?... you have other problems.

Others have addressed the tire shop part, but I want to address this bit. A JL Rubicon on 33s is a beast off-road. You'll run out of skill long before you run out of tire. Learn to wheel first. 35s and 37s are for looks if you don't already know what you can really do on the 33s. That said, it's your money, upgrade away. The BFG KO2s make a nice 35 on the OEM rims.
