Great pics tluke and thank you! What an education. I was under the impression that Jeep always had 7 slot grills but saw 9 and 8 slot grills. I loved the crate shots too. One last interesting thing. Ironically one was advertised for 50 dollars and today........50 thousand bucks.
The 7 slot grille happened because of Ford.

The army owned the plans for the Jeep, and Willys couldn't build them fast enough, so they had Ford build them too.

In order to make their built Jeeps distinctive, Ford used a seven(7) slot grille.

I think you’re mixing two different epochal changes.

Ford (reportedly Henry Ford himself) designed the 9-slot stamped grille because the early Willys grille was too complex and couldn’t be stamped. So most WWII Jeeps from either manufacturer had 9.

When Willys entered the civilian market with the CJ, they dropped it to 7 slots, whether for cost reasons or (I believe but can’t swear to it) because they wanted the trademark.

My son Todd bought a 1946 civilian version of the Jeep from a old timer who may have bought it new.

$50 for a Jeep in a crate.
Yes, we do need a few boxes. Todd did buy a 1946 Jeep, the first civilian model it had a power take-off at the rear bumper he drove it all over our mountain. I had a hard time fitting behind the wheel because my belly hit, today I might have some room. The guy who sold this to Todd (If I remember right) bought it new in 1946. He looked that old in 2010 +- when we went to see it. Todd drove it home, It was summer.
The Forwarder made from Tony's dead Cherokee became a real workhorse in the over a year Todd spent logging before we got the big guys to do the hard stuff on the steep grades. This has been a family trip and Todd's and now Tony's house projects are all part of our Michigan adventure.
Thanks

He made them larger diameter, more narrow, and much deeper cleats ( paddles?) for deep snow. Functional but a PITA so only used when absolutely needed.

Sounds like my dad, he made something from nothing to fix stuff. It was not anything to look at, but it did do the job. They did not need much more than they had on hand to fix most things.

I think you’re mixing two different epochal changes.

When Willys entered the civilian market with the CJ, they dropped it to 7 slots, whether for cost reasons or (I believe but can’t swear to it) because they wanted the trademark.
The stamped grill simplified production as the original grill was welded bar. that was Fords doing. For a short time Ford was stamping their logo on the tub. Shortly after that, all Jeeps were standardized to make production and field repairs cheaper and easier. After standardization, no company could put their logo on the Jeep. Ford though continued put “F” on many of the bolt heads though stylized in the Ford font.

The CJ went to a 7 slot grill due to the size of the required SAE 7” headlights and the signal/running lights beneath the headlights, to make it legal for public road use.

I remember as a kid growing up in the 1960's, in the back of magazines (like Hot Rod, and comic books) there were ads selling Army Surplus Jeeps for like $50. My family talked about buying one but never actually got around to it. Would have been cool. Might have been a scam, but there probably were still a lot of them in storage at that time, just 20 years after the end of WWII.

My great uncle had an original Jeep. I always understood it was Army surplus. He painted it white and used it on his expansive property in North Carolina. That was also in the 1960's. As a kid we thought it was awesome, until we road around in it. My great uncle and my dad rode in the front and us three kids piled in the back, no seats, just bouncing up and down. No roll bar or top, we almost bounce right out of the back a few times. After that we were a little nervous about riding around in it. Would love to have it today.

Best,
-Tim
