Most officers still wear their ballistic vests under the uniform shirt. On humid, 95+ degree days, once you get your core temperature up and start sweating under that vest (usually the first call of the shift), it is very hard to cool back down, much less dry out under that thing. The vest is a heck of an insulator. I never used one of these "body armor vents", but I sure wish they were a thing when I wore a vest every day.

Some departments now have ballistic vests that are worn over the uniform shirt. Many of them are designed to look just like the shirt, so you can't even tell the vest is being worn on the outside. If you get hot, take the outer vest off and sit in the AC for a bit...problem solved.

One of my co-workers wore one of the outer vests to a meeting with staff in an attempt to persuade them to let us use them on the motorcycle unit. It matched our uniform shirt very nicely. He carried a second vest into the meeting. The staff looked the carried one over, scowled, and said they thought it would look too unprofessional. That is when he admitted he was wearing one. They hadn't even noticed. Request...denied.

I don't disagree, entirely, but the plethora of Wrangler-specific baubles and doodads sold on Amazon and eBay, and occasionally evident in photos posted on this site, makes it very plain that Jeep owners occupy the same market.

Although odd at face value, when taking the broad view, it's really not so far out in left field. For many years, motorcyclists like myself have used heated gear to extend the riding season. There are considerable parallels:

Heated steering wheel? Heated grips and/or heated gloves and/or purpose-built handguards (I use all three).
Heated seats? Heated saddle.
Heated jacket (via dashboard vent)? Electric liners; this being what I currently wear.

9:40 yeah that's some dedication especially in Colorado. I think I'm doing just the opposite; leave the doors on, crank up the heat and roll the window down, I'm toasty warm in a t-shirt.
