Hagerman Pass and the Colorado Midland Railway
Wednesday – Saturday, July 27-30, 2022


I had big plans for this extended weekend around Hagerman Pass and Leadville, but then I ended up taking it easy and hanging out around camp most of the time, but sometimes that's a nice way to spend a couple of days, too. Typical of the short-lived ghost towns of the Colorado Rockies was Douglass City – the remains of which you see here. Douglass City however was built for a different purpose – to house the Italian construction workers who labored on the Colorado Midland in this area and who helped construct the Hagerman Tunnel, trestles etc. — This one street “city” had eight saloons, mostly in tents plus a dance hall. Here the “professor” played the piano while the “ladies of the evening” too jaded for Leadville, entertained and took the laborers’ money. The wild city was the scene of drinking, shooting, fighting, knifing, and others innocent pleasures.

Shadow Mountain Fire Lookout

Last week I spent some time visiting about half a dozen Fire Lookouts in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. I started with a hike to the Shadow Mountain Fire Lookout, which is the only remaining Fire Lookout in Rocky Mountain National Park. Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

After leaving Rocky Mountain National Park I headed north into the Medicine Bow Mountains of Wyoming and spent the next two nights in the Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower while I explored the surrounding area a bit. Medicine Bow Peak in the Snowy Range

Here’s a pair of recent additions. The Jeep is pretty much where I want it, so aside from maybe a few small things I come across along the way, I don’t really have anything else planned for it once I get the gas tank skid installed that’s been sitting in my garage for months. I’d rather be using it every weekend than working on it


After installing my Cargo Dog storage box a few weeks ago, I lost the place I typically store my hiking poles and was looking for a new location where they would still be quick and easy to access. That’s when I came across these trays from Jeep Storage Tray that fit the bill. The other side makes a good place to store my sandals when I’m sleeping in the back, too.

I also recently added this inexpensive rear overhead MOLLE panel that I’m going to mount some pouches and a fire extinguisher to.
