Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
We tried to get to Alaska with the Jeep in 2022, had to turn around when we were in Canada north of the Washington border. Then planned to go in 2023 and had to head home for our son that needed surgery. This year family delayed our travel again for the third year in a row and caused us to return home in January. Family issues have been addressed and we are ready to roll. Fingers crossed..........

So tomorrow, we leave for Alaska from Michigan. Tuesday morning May 7th. We will head north through the UP of Michigan then west crossing in to Canada at the Roosville border crossing on the west side of Glacier Nation Park area. Then head to Alaska through Canada. Once in Alaska, I have over five hundred points of interest on the map that we will try to visit while in Alaska. I have no illusion that I will not see all the points of interest. They are just there so we can make decisions as we go. We will be over to Homer on the west side of the Alaskan Bay, then as far north as Prudhoe Bay, Maybe even take a flight over to the most North Western Spot in The US. Depending on the cost, before we head back to the lower 48.

Here.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xb9qUS695svhMSyGA?g_st=ic

Our basic route looks like this at approx 12,000 miles before we do any extra driving to trails, or other points of interest.
Jeep Wrangler JL Third Time is the Charm Alaska Trip Plan: 4 months of Jeeping, Hiking and Camping in 19 States and Canada! 1715000283773-gd

We will come back in through Washington and head to the Dusty Ershim trail in California, then possible over to Moab, Colorado and Missouri before heading home in Mid to late August. We can be gone as long last September 17th, before we have to be home. This route will get us the remaining BOH trails west of the Mississippi River. There will only be five badge trail left for us to get east of the Mississippi River.

This is our map for Alaska with the points of interested pinned on the map.

We will be traveling in our 2019 JLUR pulling a E-Pro 15TB camper. I have set the camper up to boondock camp. I have installed a compost potty, a 200 ah lithium battery, up to 400 watts of solar, and a DC to DC charger so if I choose to, the Jeep will charge the camper battery up to 30 amps while driving. I have the standard 1000 watt inverter/charger and an additional 2000 watt inverter for power in the camper. Basically so we can use the microwave/convection oven off the battery. We tend to cook nice meals and have leftovers at times.

So far, the 200 watts of solar has easily been able to keep up with the power usage in the camper, and I have an addition 200 watts from portable solar panels if needed. There is a 10 inch dual memory foam queen bed inside that we can leave set up and I added a Lagoon Table. Then had custom seat cushions built for the seats to be more comfortable. We have already pulled this camper approximately 4000 miles this year.

We have cold weather camped in it. The camper has heat, and heated tanks so we should be fine in Alaska too.
Pic from earlier when we picked up the camper.

I put new tires on the Jeep, anther set of Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT 37x12.5r17. The Jeep is geared to 5.13 and has a semi float 60 in the back. I done a bunch of maintenance prior to our departure. Fluid changes, torquing bolts, cleaning and what not. I still have one issue to address today. My front American Adventure Labs passenger LED turn signal is not working. If I shake the wiring it will come back on, so I have a loose connection behind the inner fender. Should be an easy fix this afternoon.

Just a few more things to added to the camper and we are ready to go.

This year, we do have a friend staying at our house while we are gone. He has recently moved out of his girlfriend's house and will keep our lawn and house maintained while we are gone and that will also give him time to find a house to buy. Plus kick us money while we travel for using the house..... sweet.

As I finished up the inverter install yesterday, the coolest neighbor kids stopped over. Age five and seven and gave Carla and me custom Jeep hats that they made for us.

Let the adventure begin. I do have a couple from California that plan to travel with us for a bit. There are a couple JLWranglerforms members that I plan to see along my journey and there is about 15 or so people in Alaska that want to take me wheeling all over Alaska. Pics and video will be coming.

Awesome trip plan!! It looks like you’re missing some of the better parts of Alberta though. I’d suggest coming up from Glacier National park to get on either hiway 22 north or hiway 40 north. Then when you get to hiway 1 the Trans Canada, either take 22 north( beautiful rolling scenic hiway with Rockies on your left and ranch lands on your right) or 40(gravel through foothills), or cut over and go up the ice fields parkway though Banff and Jasper if you’ve never been. The parkways about the best Rockies drive in North America.
Very touristy though in July and August.
Then once as far north as hiway 16, go north up hiway 40 again to Grande Cache. This stretch is paved and also beautiful. The hiway 40 route north of hiway 1 (Trans Canada) to hiway 16(Yellowhead)is all gravel mostly and full of random camping spots everywhere with side roads heading to the back side of Jasper and Banff park boundary. We camp in there several times a year.
Reach out if you need help while in Alberta central areas, I live just west of Edmonton and know these areas quite well.
Good luck and enjoy!!

Been looking forward to hearing this news - looks set to be a great trip. And if experience bears true, especially in the north country, the things that arise not even on the 'points of interest' list will turn into some of the trip highlights.

Looking forward to your fantastic photos and narration along the trip. Safe travels -

Hey Ted @wibornz question:

I've read, maybe incorrectly, that the E-Pro isn't rated as a 4 season travel trailer and yet you referenced heated tanks.

How did it fair for you in the cold? What steps beyond the composting dry toilet did you take to address cold weather usage and what do you like and dislike about the model you own? How did your Lithium (Iron Phosphate?) battery, a chemistry known for not behaving well at accepting charge below freezing, work for you?

TIA

Definitely make sure your Li batteries stay above freezing. If they don't have a BMS (battery management system), then you might want some heated blankets or something to keep them warm enough for charging.

Unfortunately for Canada and their economy, I travel with a restricted firearm so Canada only allows me seven days to travel across Canada to Alaska. So my travel through Canada will be a pretty direct route. It also sucks that I have to give Canada a specific date and border crossing into Canada, and into Alaska and the same for the return. I have to be to Roosville border crossing on May 16, and in Alaska by May 22nd. No big deal, but I had to give them a specific date also when I would re-enter Canada to return to the lower 48. This takes a lot of flexibility out of the travel.

But hey it is what it is.

I will keep you in mind and appreciate the offer of help if needed. This is why this forum is so cool.

Thanks, we always look for that hidden gem and often find them. We have a bunch of people in Alaska that are taking us off roading and we are looking forward to it. I am sure I will get some great photos and video.

I can, but I am not allowed to use it for protection in Canada. I have done all the required paperwork to bring a restricted weapon/semi auto handgun through Canada to Alaska. So it can be done, the process was way simpler than I expected. The semi auto pistol has to have a barrel length greater than 4.1 inches, a 10 round mag or less. You call Canada, they send you the forms via email, they stayed on the phone to ensure I received the forms, had me open them, answered my questions and gave me advice on filling out the forms. I emailed the completed forms back to them. Canada called me and personally went over the filled out forms with me to ensure I understood what is required of me to transport a restricted firearm. I also have that persons direct phone number if I have any follow up questions or need assistance. They were super helpful.

I will have this with me and of cours

e properly secured while traveling in Canada. I will mail the 15 round mags to a Post Office in Alaska. Ihave 10 round mags for Canada. The ammo will also be properly stored while transporting the pistol though Canada.
