Update to the camera hole issue, it’s not perfect but I drilled out the camera hole to
1 3/8” with a $10 step bit I got off Amazon, here’s the results, huge improvement IMHO

Returned from 4WP today to discuss excessive rattle noise coming from my 35 x 12.5 Nitto Trail Grappler mounted on the new (ish) Smittybuilt bracket. We concluded the tire is quite secure on the mount and that when one flexes the tire back and forth in the forward/back axis you can appreciate the door itself flexing and thus the source of the rattle. Not flexing or sagging at the hinges but the sheet metal (aluminum/magnesium whatever) itself flexing. Rattle is also not generating from the tailgate latch. Indianapolis has terrible roads and each road joint or pothole produces quite an annoyance. Although it was inexpensive and works per se, the JL tailgate door does not appropriately support ( I guess FCA said that somewhere). Email into ROAM today about the slimline tire carrier bumper shipping timing and if the holes noted on bumper are to accommodate the backup sensors.

I spoke with ROAM last week and the slimline should be shipping at the beginning of February. At least according to whoever responds to their FB Messenger. I actually moved from Indy to Houston not too long ago, and I'm thinking about swinging by ROAM and picking one up once they're available.

I ordered the new DV8 body mounted tire carrier. Supposedly not shipping until mid January.

I liked the look of their previous tire carrier for the JK, so I decided to run with this one. It's a little gaudy. But it should look really nice with a fastback soft top, which I am waiting on to be released.

Nice! How big of a tire will it carry? I ended up going with the GenRight it’s the only one I could find at the time I ordered mine.

Around mid february would be a more realistic time frame. Yes they have holes in the bumper for the sensors. I believe that was one of the delays getting this out was making sure it was 100% right.

I couldn't find a video so I followed the instructions for the most part. I started my install last weekend and finished it today.

I think it looks great! I have run the Genright on a previous JK(also with the fastback top), but for nearly half the price I would much rather go with this option when the frame chop bumpers become available

So this beautiful thing came in after 9 weeks and there are no instructions per ACE it’s similar to the JK install which does not help much has anyoneinstalled one yet that can help me out?

Have you seen this video?

I’m hoping that other than the hinge swap on the JL, the install is the same as the JK.

If you’re doing the install this weekend, would you make note of any critical steps?

Just an FYI to everyone that I sent Teraflex an email earlier this week and I was told that the JL tire carriers should be "ready to ship middle to end of Feb." I asked if the carrier would utilize the factory brake light and backup camera which I was told yes. So we'll see!

9 Weeks?

Ouch, I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago, and I saw 4 weeks on the website. Sure hope it's closer to 4 than 9, looks like I"ll be making a call on Monday just to get an idea what the current lead time is. Definitely post how you like it, I'll be very interested to see!

FedEx surprised me and delivered mine today instead of Monday. And mine took 9 weeks too.

I worked on the install tonight and I got about 80-90% completed in about 3 hours. It definitely is a job that is really helpful to have a second set of hands. The install is basically the same as the video I posted earlier with the exception of the hinge replacement.

At this point, I’m on the fence about the carrier as a whole. I really like the look and think it’s going to be good, but I had a couple issues I’m going to have to work out.

The first issue is the hinges. I was able to get the hinges, tailgate, and carrier aligned without my spare mounted. Without the spare, the tailgate closes relatively smoothly and latches like it was stock. As soon as I mount my spare though, the tailgate sags about 1/4-3/8” and you have to lift the tailgate to get it to latch. I’m only running 35’s, so I’d be curious to see how much it sags with a 37 or 40. My game plan for tomorrow is to put some washers behind the bottom hinge plate and try to compensate for the tailgate sag.

Second issue is that it looks like I may have gotten the wrong nuts for two of the four hinge/pivot bolts. The bolts all appear to be the same, but two of the nuts are definitely bigger than the other two. I’ll have to try to pick up two more of the correct nuts.

The third issue is that the four holes that attach the wheel mount to the main carrier frame appear to be slightly out of alignment. When the spare is bolted on and the license plate relocation bracket is installed, both the spare and the plate are rotated and not quite horizontal. I was able to drill out the holes slightly and able to get everything to line up a little better.

The fourth issue, is no fault of the spare carrier, but the locking bolt for the license plate relocation bracket doesn’t clear the center of my wheel. I’m going to need to get a socket head cap screw or a set screw to get it to clear my wheel.

I’ll keep you guys posted on progress tomorrow and get some pictures when I’m finished.
