Good history to hopefully dispel the misinformation put out by some in the community.

Great thread, but one major issue.
Don't buy that "Karl Probst invented the Jeep" legend.
It's a claim made by his family after his death. There is no proof that he "invented" it. He provided an important technical drawing. But he didn't create the Jeep.
Probst himself never claimed it, even during the "Jeep hearings" at the Federal Trade Commission where the decision was made, that only Willys are allowed to use Jeep as a brand name.
Go and try to find a source for Probsts fatherhood that was written before 1962.
There is not a single person who invented the Jeep, it was a process influenced by many.
A lot of people from Bantam, Willys Overland, Ford and the Quartermaster's Corps were involved and the best ideas won.
And I think that's a pretty American thing to do.
Teamwork made the little jeep that freed us from tyranny here.

Created is probably the wrong word that was used for emphasis. It should have been worded that he was "instrumental" in the design. Certainly he did not by himself invent the Jeep as it became, but the history is facinating.

And FWIW, this is a very simplistic look at the history of Jeep.
