Several of us have quoted emails from our dealers that this is exactly what the factory is offering for the Jeeps stuck in JB due to the soft top shortage. This is a highly unusual situation. My dealer said the same thing when I first caught wind that Koon's was asking their customers if they can ship without the top and he said "the factory will never ship a vehicle if it wasn't complete". This is basically what your dealer and the area rep are saying.

2 days later I get an email stating that he was contacted by the factory asking if they can ship it without the soft top and that he would have to request the soft top through the process used for items that are "forgotten" at the factory.

Your dealer will likely tow the same line until the factory contacts him - if they contact him. I ordered through a high volume dealer in the Houston area and they may be working down the list of dealers trying to clear the most Jeep's they can off the lot with the fewest number of calls.
Any chance you can provide the email, or some additional details? My dealer doesn't know who to contact to ask - hoping there is a contact number that could lead them in the right direction.

Right before I posted.

My dealer just called actually and said I could cancel my top and get my jeep released. I would be credited the money and could get a top full price when they are available.
Let me double check people are getting the option to get jeep without top and get it sent to dealer later for them.
Let me see if I got this right--and this is sarcasm, not directed at you, but FCA.

FCA's solution to a problem their customers didn't cause is to offer them the right to buy this top, when it becomes available: at full price(!), not the almost 5% off of invoice I ordered my rig with?!

Shouldn't FCA be FURTHER discounting it off what it was offered to me at, at the time of purchase, for my inconvenience and patience?

My concern with this would be trying to get the dealer to go through the process of trying to obtain a "forgotten item", when at this point, they have already made the sale.

I've asked my dealer several times and he has contacted regional rep and the answer was in no way shape or form would they ship like this or "incomplete" I've purchased about 15 vehicles from this dealer and know the owner.

Exactly! The dealer would never want to go through the trouble after the sale.

FCA did not screw this up. They do not manufacture them on site. They have an agreement with a vendor. If the vendor is not supplying per their agreement the vendor is penalized.

I am not championing for FCA but there are so many complaints about FCA and many do not understand what goes into manufacturing a vehicle and how complex it can be. There are way to many scenarios that can affect builds that may be out of their control.

I understand the frustration as we are all very excited for this new release but understand there is nothing you can do about it and your energy is best spent on many other things in this life. You will get your Jeep albeit later than you wanted.

SS: I complete respect what you are saying and the facts you site. I do though wish to point out the following--and it's directed at FCA, not you.

Bias: yes, I'm waiting on my JL, but unlike so many--I'm not in any particular rush.

It was Jeep's choice, in the interest of profit, to turf out aspects of the JL's production over doing them in-house. Because it was their choice, they, not their subcontractor, are responsible to the buying public for this delay. That FCA wants to in turn sanction their vendor--which you bet they will--in lower fees paid to them for agreements not held, that's their business.

And do you think that FCA will share those reduced costs they pay the vendor with the public that FCA's decision to turf this process out to was affected by? Unlikely.

Manufacturers like FCA, and I speak from experience not in automotive design but other fields, and dare I say common sense, often don't put their "eggs in one basket" and have the production of some mission critical element done by one firm when they choose to turf things out.

Rather, they spec out what it is they want, and have more than outfit handle production--no differently than an airplane has more than one engine. Now, is it cheaper with economies of scale, for them to have one supplier: it might be, but these are all part of the executive decisions FCA management makes, that weigh profit and risk that they alone need to be held responsible for.

You're right, manufacturer at this complex level has so, so many working gears that even the best of contingency planners with managements authority to spend money, reducing profit and risk can still result in production delays--not that, as you point out, that you're either championing FCA or coming to their defense: perhaps best put, merely explaining these delays.

And some might say that the solution to this problem is to start producing product, and ironing out kinks in the process in greater anticipation of orders. But that costs money.

I agree with you that frustration on the wait, something the buyer is not able to control, while completely understandable, is also a 1st world problem. It's not cancer, and happier, looking back, will the owner be for a working product that took longer to develop.

...that is if this is a product much less likely to see shop time than the JK.

@YFD_322 - congrats, I just noticed on MOTS you went KZ today! Things may be slowly starting to move again.

On another note - my dealer said he put in the request to have my jeep shipped without the soft top, per the request from the factory, on Tuesday, but I haven't moved an inch...

Let’s just hope that as @blackjackpershing has said, KZ is the new JB, is no longer true ;)

And in reality, I bet your jeep just moved a few yards from the back of the lot to the front of the lot..
