I just bought my mid year 2018 JLU Rubicon last week and haven't had a daily driver with a manual since my 1984 Toyota SR-5 4x4! I'm still trying to find the sweet spot on first and second gear, but todays manual is way more forgiving than thirty years ago. This is my retirement gift to myself and I love the manual! Makes me feel like a teenager again. Looking forward to taking it off road soon to try out the main reason I bought it, CRAWLING :)

Glad I found this section for the real Men and Women that drive sticks!

Love my manual JLUR. Question - is anyone’s shifter creaking? Mine creaks from neutral to first, second and reverse. Any ideas? It’s not stiff and I’m not worried about it. Just an annoyance. Have had it since early April with 13.5k miles.

I'd have the dealership inspect the shifter cables just to make sure they are freely moving. Maybe something needs a little shot of lube.

Yea probably right. Was just hoping to avoid dealer trip. I had a creaking clutch which also just needed some lube and an adjustment. Been quiet ever since!

I just picked up my 2019 JLR last weekend, first time owning a stick. It’s a blast. At what speed/rpm do you guys shift to 2nd? It seems like the jeep always jerks after I shift from 1st to 2nd

I’ve found the sweet spot to be between 2500 and 3000 RPMs. It also gets even better as the Jeep breaks in. Enjoy it! Nothing beats manual!

It took me a while to get used to first gear too. Still don't love it. It's very short. Now I have about 9,000 miles and I'm used to it.

It highly depends on the speed you want to achieve. In slow traffic you want to shift almost immediately at or even below 2000 rpm. The jerking is because of the low gearing of 1st gear, so if you go higher than to 2000 you have to keep going with a good dose of gas. The jerking happens when you go relatively high on RPM and then drop them on the next gear because you didn’t intend to go that fast. Tricky to explain. While cruising I keep mine above 2000 rpm regardless of gear.

Give it a couple months, mine/I did the same thing and my buddies would laugh. I actually think its just getting use to the clutch. I've had mine for over four months now and I don't notice a thing anymore.
Have fun!!!!

Has anyone had any grinding noises during shifts? I have a Jeep service manager in the neighborhood and mentioned that he had a few come in. Nothing they could do even after replacing the clutch/flywheel and eventually transmission.
Hi callerys,
We understand why this may be concerning. If this is something you would like to eventually have addressed, you may send us a private message and we will gladly have this documented and looked into a bit further.

My noise was not grinding...but what sounded like cheap mud tires driving down the road. Took it in 3 weeks ago, was told I need a new first gear and some bearings. Been sitting in the same spot at the dealership. Apparently, the are no extra transmissions anywhere on the planet.

@JeepCares folks have been very helpful to me on a couple of things. They have my appreciation for that, and I'm glad they are here and paying attention. I don't think it is fair to snipe at them.

Well honestly, I am happy for you then! I had quite the opposite experience, and I will never utilize them again.

But that has nothing to do with my previous comment. From all of the customer service departments I've dealt with I have found tailored responses to an individual/issue come off much more helpful and effective than a canned response you have seen/received a dozen times. 90% of a CS rep's work is keeping the customer in good spirits and managing their expectations (since they have little-to-no room to change company policies or help anymore than they are allowed to) so taking a few extra seconds by not using a canned message can help keep the customer in a good mood by feeling they are being taken care of properly and not just "part of the script."

Just my thoughts! If you ask most people, they aren't event worth $0.02.
