I have been shopping for a tailgate folding table and noted that the tailgate has a vent system. Not all aftermarket folding tables have vents to allow for passthrough of air. What is the function of the tailgate vents?

It helps equalize pressure from the interior when you shut the door, open a window at speed and anything else that could change the interior pressure.

Ever try closing a door to an airtight room or box?

Vent is needed to close your doors smoothly

No of course not...was using the "air tight" for example.

The vent is there to allow pressure release when closing the doors.

What's so funny?

Obviously you missed the humor I meant. So my serious answer...I hear so much wind noise coming in to my current Jeep and my last Jeep that I highly doubt that that it is sealed tight enough to cause any pressure problems (as many cars do) when shutting the doors

Doc... Duh.
If it’s needed to close the door why does no other suv have vents on the boot?

Stands to reason that if you're pumping air into the car via the A/C, you're going to need a vent somewhere else to let the old air out.

Also lets you share the ear-flaying bass from your massive sub-woofer with your fellow road users at the lights.

If I am remembering correctly, there was a member who posted here that they had obstructed the tailgate vent (maybe with swapped tire carrier?) and when they closed their door it blew out the rear side window on the hard top.

If you have one of the Outback Adventure tailgate tables, the vent is for filling the table and the back area with dust and silt. I will likely put some filter media in front of it to block a lot of what comes in. Then, hopefully, when I shut the doors with the top on, the dust and silt will get blown back out through the vents.
