i'm thinking of taking my stock tires/wheels (with tpms) and putting on my aftermarkets nitto grappler tire/ wheels (without tpms) for the winter. the nittos are great in the snow, which i had them on my 07 grand cherokee. when i ran the aftermarket setup on my grand cherokee, i just had the tire light on on the dash, which didnt bother me.

so my question is where the aftermarkets set did not come with the tpms, is it going to throw error codes other than the tire light stays on.on the dash. will the tpms read / ping when i put the stock one back on in the spring time. or do i need to get it flashed again. also any issues with the battery in the tpms going bad when not in use.

Without the wheel sensors, you would just get the warning light on the dash. It shouldn't throw any codes because it has no affect on the engine/emissions.

When you switch back to wheels with sensors, the light should go out after a short drive. The system just needs some time to re-recognize that the wheel sensors are back in range.

The wheel sensors don't have their own power source. My knowledge has become rusty from non use, so I might be about to mention the wrong component name, but the function is still true. The wheel sensor is simply a pressure transducer that converts a psi reading into an electrical resistance value that is wirelessly read by the powered tpms module located somewhere on the body.

TPM sensors do carry a battery... The roundish side of such a sensor holds the battery.

headbarcode, thats what i figured.thanks for the info

kivo, i'm thinking the battery will last at least 7 years, like anyother tpsm battery.

my question is why worry just switch to AT tires and never go back to Summer tires (the crappy factory all season tires). i switched 3 months ago only lost 2 MPG and i went from 245s to 285s. just get a good set of 265 70 17 nittos and never look back.

It depends on your climate. Even the A/Ts that have the 3PMSF symbol aren’t as good in the snow as dedicated winter tires like Nokian Hakkapeliittas.

you didn't read his post he is buying Nitto trail grapplers so he is just buying AT tires for winter and might as well just switch to them year round.

Looks like all your questions have been answered but to further touch on the sensor battery... the sensor will go into "sleep" mode when not in motion :fingerscrossed:

read the original post. i already have a set of nitto a/t tires from my past ride. and they are great in the snow. at work i run snow tires and they arent the greatest. so snow tire are not worth it for me.

Why would you even go back to street tires?
i took the nitto tires and wheels off my past ride. so i have a extra set. i figured i would swap them on for the winter since they are great in the winter. and figured swap back to the factory tires for the spring/summer/fall weather. i'm looking at the fact of stretching out the tire life between the 2 sets.
