Old one: I was at an auto show in 2006 or so. I had my old 98 TJ. Being curious about new/ other vehicles, I checked out the FJ Cruiser. It looked like a Tonka toy, and I loved that about it, but I just wasn't impressed overall. It wasn't comfortable to sit in and seemed like it was more show than go. As I was checking out the first JK I had ever seen, I overheard a conversation from a guy who was probably in his mid 30's at the time, and his wife/ girlfriend:
Guy: "Check it out, the doors and top can still come off."
Ladyfriend:"How much is it?"
Guy:"sticker says $32xxx"
Ladyfriend: "You'd pay $30k+ for this and the doors and top come off?"

RIP the dream for that guy. Unless he sent her packing.

Not a specific one, but a few I keep seeing in Jeep groups:

"THESE NEW ONES ARE JUNK. FIAT CRAP"
"TOO MANY ELECTRONICS"
"TOO EXPENSIVE"
"MY (insert pile of sh!t rig that is more rust, bad decisions, and debt than a vehicle) CAN OUTPERFORM THAT FIAT CRAP. AND IT'S $20"
These comments are usually from the early model Cherokee XJ guys. I love me some built, clean XJ's but these are not those. These guys are the special types that rip the front clip off of them and toss 35's with some kind of dangerous looking contraption of a lift... all on a Dana35.

One more, slightly more specific: there was a guy who would post once a month asking the same dumb questions about the 2020 when it wasn't even out yet. "I don't know if i want a 2020 Rubicon. I like my JKU but I'm also looking at a Toyota 4 Runner TRD Edition. Those of you who have a JL- (insert same stupid question he asked last month, followed up with some unsubstantiated claim that the 2020 Toyotas are more "reliable")? I just don't know". Numerous people, myself included tried to help this guy. Finally, people got sick of his nonsense and started heckling every time he posted. He finally tells us he bought a 2020 4Runner TRD because "reliability and capability" and a bunch of other inane yuppie BS then starts looking for pats on the back... in a Jeep group. Dude made me want to scream. Pretty sure he got banned after that one. Mostly for being an idiot.

It's probably unavoidable, considering how long Jeeps have been around. There's some version out there that represents the faults people have heard.

This is my first Wrangler, and I was expecting a cold, loud, rough ride with a sluggish engine, bad gas milage, a high center of gravity, a frustrating soft top and a clutch pedal that needed two hundred pounds of force.

I got a m/t that shifts like a Honda, an engine and road noise that was unexpectedly quiet, with plenty of grunt (in the right gear), and I'm averaging 24mpg. It has the hottest and quickest to warm up heater I've ever used, a smooth ride with cornering as good as any SUV I've had, and a soft top that's simple to operate. Basically, none of the issues that I was prepared for.

That's not to say this generation is without fault... But none of the more common misconceptions, from what I can tell. I could see the rampant steering problems from this generation making its way into the snowball of Jeep lore. Nothing's perfect I suppose.

You should see the heater/ac on the JK’s it was like sitting in front of four blow dryers

Mommyvans, Douche Buggies (Prii's and other hybrids), generic sedans, generic crossovers/suvs, econocars, or?
Usually they're in the Prius or Tesla camp. There are so many things I could say about the Tesla, but I don't.

And to clarify, I've really only caught crap from these people maybe 2-3x. I get complements on my Jeeps almost daily and they're pretty much bone-stock base Sport models.

Really hope he looked into them when they hit the dealers. My '07 JKUX was 24-26 if I recall correctly.

My wife told some guy in her office that I had bought a Wrangler and the guy says "best day of my life is when I sold my Wrangler" - why would you say that to anyone about any car/truck that they had just bought??

.....thanks for letting me vent.

Just remember, only difference between a Prius driver and a Tesla driver is $$$$$

He sounds like the kind of man who'd rather watch porn or have someone sleep with his woman than actually do the deed

My 2019 JLUR is my first Jeep as well. I drove one 18 years ago on Hawaii and although I enjoyed it, the fuel economy was poor. Unfortunately that specific aspect of the experience stuck in my head. I never took it anywhere but on streets and highways, and as such never got to get an idea of what it was really built for.

I am glad that I finally got smart and just put all the “negatives” aside and bought one for the capabilities it has and the abilities it affords a family that likes to camp and enjoy the outdoors. I love driving it and hate driving any of the other vehicles we own.

I’m a bit annoyed this morning with some of the stupid things that come out of the mouths of non-Wrangler owners.

It usually starts with, “oh I love your Jeep and have always wanted one.” Then it goes downhill with the stupidity...

So a co-worker of mine said, “I heard they are prone to tipping over during normal driving conditions.” I had to ask her what damn decade she is living in considering that hasn’t been an issue since the days of the YJ...just ignorant, but she wants one.

Then she doubled down and said they aren’t fast, to which I responded, “it’s not a fucking Hellcat.” I’m sure she won’t be concerned about speed when she gets stuck somewhere in that rear-wheel drive BMW 328i she currently drives and needs the assistance of one of us in our “slow” Wranglers.
I had a 331 as a rental in florida... they accelerate quick, but as soon as you hit 80mph, they kinda slow down. Hit about 120mph in it. Faster than a wrangler, but meh.

Most of my conversations with non Jeep owners go the other way.

They start with someone seeing my Jeep and saying. "I want to have a Jeep" or "My next car will be a Jeep"

I follow by asking why? Usually their answer is something thoughtless like they are cool, or I always wanted one, or I like the way they look.

Then I gently ask practical question about how they use their car. Do you do a lot of highway driving, drive a lot of miles? Do you think you will take it off road? How often do you think you will take the top and/or doors off? Ultimately I end up telling most people there are other cars that would fit their use better and be much more cost effective to own.

Honestly, If my Wife and I had only 2 cars, neither of them would be a Jeep. But absolutely the Jeep is the best extra car ever for me. I would have 2 econo daily drivers if only to be practical and still afford a Jeep as a third car.

If we didn't do regular highway driving, or could share a car more for commuting, maybe something more practical and Jeep could work, but not for many people.

I have had a Wrangler for about 10 years now and will likely have one until I struggle to get in and out more than I can manage, but I wouldn't want to commute in one every day. Maybe if I had a short commute with little or no highway driving.

But I certainly don't understand people who own a Jeep as a replacement for an SUV, drive significant amounts on the highway and never go off road or take the top off - which seems like an increasingly common occurrence.
