My bad, for some reason I had Wrangler in my head and NOT 3.6 Grand Cherokee. The 3.6 GC genuine Mopar filter looks to be $50 and change. BUT myself I see no reason to stay MOPAR for a filter. I would buy a reasonable non Mopar filter for that. MOPAR did not make it, it was made by someone else and marketed as Mopar.

strong chance it’s a wix filter. Possibly champion labs, aka Fram.
Yeah, even $40 for an OEM disposable filter seems a bit much. Think I paid that price for my K&N Select DryFLOW panel filter for my JL (AEM-spec that's oddly hard to find).

And yes, it's highly unlikely that Mopar is making the filters themselves, let alone the striking UAW union workers that only assemble parts in a factory ?

Well the big 3 strike has hit the dealership I use here in Michigan. 70 dollars for a air filter for a 20 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L. WTF. I can see maybe 40.
Purchase from Napa

I would disagree. The Mopar filters are made by people that weave the fibers by hand, then fold the paper and forge that metal grate. After that, they mix the chemicals ans hand form the seal. If it wasn't the Jeep way of doing everything right, they would be cheaper. Yet they do it the old school way.

It's like oil filters, they do not do it like Mann Hummell over in Gastonia NC. They do it all by hand. The filter factory for the 2.0T has been running into problems as the clinking of them hand forming the metal housing has got them in trouble with the county due to noise issues.

How do they compare to the AEM filters? Its what Ive ran for decades cause I never liked the oiled K&N ones.

I'm pretty sure that this particular filter (K&N Select #SA-5076) is actually made by AEM, since K&N now owns AEM and afaik, doesn't use DryFLOW for most, if not all of their applications (while AEM does). Plus, the material is a lot denser and not see-though like a regular K&N filter.

Really not sure why this particular SKU even exists, since AEM still doesn't sell a JL panel filter for some reason. The listing just showed up under the regular K&N oiled listing one day at Amazon and disappeared about a month later (was shipped and sold by Amazon, not 3rd-party). Looks like Walmart has them for $23, though it doesn't mention Wrangler, JL or 3.6L at their listing at all (says that all on my box and fits my 3.6L perfectly). Quality seems every bit as good as the AEM drop-in filter I bought my dad for his JK and imo, the rubber material and fitment is much better than the AFE dry panel filter I bought for my last car.

Be glad you don’t own a 392. It’s like having a high maintenance girlfriend.

Fascinating I can't find this filter listed anywhere else, even on K&N's site. But I'm going to roll the dice and order one from Walmart, thanks for the tip.

Yeah, it's not on K&N's website at all. I was thinking that maybe the "Select" sub-brand was a Walmart exclusive or a grey-market import or something weird, but that didn't explain why Amazon was selling them for a while. Their Select line of oil filters are their cheaper alternative to their Premium filters, so the lower price makes sense.

Just dug out my box and in tiny print it says "Made in S. Korea", so I'm guessing that wouldn't be AEM-produced, since their filters are made in the US afaik. Beats me then. I've been using mine for about 6 months without any issues, but haven't taken it back out to look it over again. Saw a few other forum posts online believing the Select air filters were AEM-made, but I'm guessing it's just AEM's design and DryFLOW recipe/spec (that K&N now owns). Not sure about the value for the $40 I paid (solely considering it's not US-made), but ~$20 seems like a really good deal for the quality.

Crazy that its such a random product you have to go digging to find, and AEM just doesnt offer it. Also blows its only at Walmart but needs must and all that.

I also found a listing on Amazon.ca but its unavailable

If the filter price went up it sounds like price gouging... I seriously doubt the 3-4 day old strike had any direct affect on the price!

Only $70?! a year ago my stealership (Fort Collins Jeep) wanted to charge me $99 to replace the cabin air filter. I laughed while sitting in front of the other customers in the lobby and said, "you want $100 for a $20-30 part and 5 minutes of labor? Are you crazy?! I'll give you $30." She declined and walked away.

What dealer are you buying from? LaFontaine? Home of the Family Deal where the only benefactors are the LaFontaine family.

That’s the problem with a lot of these mega dealers that the manufacturers love these days. Their bloated management staffs require major dollars to support and the family/owners need a slice of cake for dessert on the sale of everything.

Shame on those dealers for selling parts over and above MSRP prices. LaFontaine soaked me about $45 for a Wrangler air filter with an MSRP of $25 several years back. When I complained about excessive prices in a letter afterwards (I needed an air filter now) they sent me a customer satisfaction refund. And when I bought my 2022 Rubicon I purchased elsewhere and not from them.

Sadly my guess is the cost of your part is dealer greed and completely unrelated to the strike.

Another option is to old school it. Take the filter out, bang it on the bumper a few times and reinstall it. That way it'll give you more time to wait to get a new one.
