Paid campground. KOA, state park, etc. Something with someone on site.
First (and last) time I stayed at a KOA, the security guard almost drew his gun on me. I don't stay at private campgrounds anymore.

Were you trying to steal someone’s smokeless fire pit?
Lol. No.

I was actually on my way from my tent to the washroom building, and buddy decided to yell freeze at a high volume. When I slowly turned around, he had his hand on the grip and was in a full cowboy dueling stance.

Like most folks, I leave basic gear and bring what I'll miss if it isn't there when I return. I've left my kids a few times and they were still there every time I've returned.

Disclaimer: My kids are 16 and 12 and can handle themselves.

Why would you stay at a campground that required an armed security guard?

I have stayed in KOA's across the country many times and never seen a security guard..where were you at when that happened?

There's a theme here of don't leave nice things behind...

In addition, you may want to add an apple air tag in a few items so you can track them if they do get picked.

Air tags and cameras are kind of silly, IMO. You'll get non-identifying pics of thieves making off with your stuff, and lose AirTags in the process, in most cases. Police aren't going to open a CSI-style episode to track some stolen camp gear.

You're generally safer at an established campground, but don't leave valuables behind. Tent, camp chairs, cooking stove... generally OK.

I actually don't like KOA's near towns. They tend to attract a certain kind of full-time RV'er. Not my idea of a "vacation" staying with that crowd if you know what I mean.

I worry a lot less in the true backcountry. Takes resources to get out there, and it usually involves staying. Still not going to leave valuables if I'm leaving for the day, but I do worry a lot less.

For 20 or 30 bucks you can see where your stuff is if there's an iphone around. I don't know if you can set a geofence up easily with them, but at least you may be able to see if your equipment is on the move.

Confronting a thief is your call. And while the cops aren't going to open a CSI style investigation, I'd be willing to guess they would meet you if you call them and say "Somebody stole my $500 battery and they are at this address, will you meet me there to pick it up".

I suppose if Andy and Barney don't have anything else going on, maybe. But, isn't the lesson here; "don't leave expensive/attractive stuff at a campsite unattended"?

My granny loves to stay back at camp…”in case shit jumps off” as she is fond of saying. She’s an ornery no nonsense kind of lady. 🤓

This may come off a little weird, but can I take your grandma camping with me??
