Stop the Bumper from Flaking

So the covering on my front bumper has been flaking, causing the metal underneath to rust. I'm going to take care of the parts that are rusting but I'm not sure what to do to stop the bumper from flaking futher. Is this a bit of bondo and paint over the parts that flaked or is there something better I can use?

It's actually the opposite. The rust has worked its way under the paint and is making the paint flake off. What the paint was adhered to is now rust. You need to sand it down and remove all the rust, including rust that is under paint that hasn't flaked off yet. Then apply a rust-inhibiting primer and paint to match.

Got it. The plan had been to sand the current rust and apply some Rustoleum Reformer to the spots. Now I know to go further to find the rest of it.

I'd pull that bumper and have it sandblasted and powder coated again.

I agree, that thing is in bad shape.

Is the bumper coming in contact with the flares? If so, they’re likely just rubbing wearing off whatever coating was on the bumper, and then rust is forming there and then spreading. So it may happen again once you repaint it.
