Wonder how this fits into the JL model lifespan.

If the platform can be updated or if this tech will be for “JM“

I hope it doesn't. Do you really want all of this "software" running in your vehicle? My Jeep doesn't need to have marketplaces, games, autodriving, and all this other BS that, at the end of the day, is designed solely for the purpose of telemetry and tracking you just as effectively as your cellphone does.

Our current UConnect systems that are on their way out already do this by nature of using 4G for navigation positioning instead of good ol' fashioned GPS. This is just the next evolution.

They saw how much money subscriptions are raking in on mobile devices, now they want a piece of that action.

Ugh. The subscription model needs to die a quick death. Across the board, everywhere it has been applied.

Now, an increasing number of automakers such as GM have the technical capability to actually offer drivers the ability to subscribe to services they may want in a vehicle. That move hasn’t been without controversy, as consumers push back on the idea of having to subscribe to options like heated seats or adaptive cruise control that one used to pay for at the time the vehicle was purchased.
One Word................... ABSURD!!!!!!!

There is something even creepier about this that hasn't been mentioned, and that is the possibility of software systems being so infused that you no longer have the ability to modify your Jeep. And that is not because people couldn't figure it out, but rather because it will be illegal. You can already see this in farm equipment.

Just wait until it gets to the point that the manufacturer never sells the vehicle, and you buy monthly options from them that apply to a grouping of vehicles. You pick the car of the day from that group and have it drive itself to you. They can shut them down remotely or report it as stolen if you don't return it in time.

Those GM cruise systems actually make sure your full attention is in the right direction, if it senses it's not it will slow the vehicle down or shut it off.

Okay Klaus Schwab. I’ll own nothing and be happy, right.

Not sure the software can keep up with the constant correction of the steering wheel on a wrangler to keep it straight 😂

This is what it’s already like buy Chinese manufactured drones. In the name of safety they’ve implemented No-Fly-Zones (NFZ), they know where you fly and you have to get “permission” from them to fly. So you purchase the drone but do you really own it. Trouble is all of this has happened because to people who don’t have a stake in this infrastructure it all sounds reasonable and they have supported it. The same thing could happen to off-roading. The general public will question the need for off-roaders to be on trails in Big Bear for example, they’ll make a reasoned argument against it and with a change in a line of code you will no longer be able to off-road.

For those that don’t think this could happen, that’s pretty much what’s happened to the commercial drone market.

You sure about that? GPS is far more accurate than any 4G positioning, and 4G would be a little useless for Nav outside of cellular coverage areas.

Yes. It's well-known and documented on this forum and others that the aircard, the 4G cellular connection component for UConnect, provides positioning for the navigation software. When it eats shit (which was rampant in 2018 models), so does your navigation.
