I just had this problem at low temps in the morning. No power steering until it warmed up (was 34 degrees). Took to dealer and they flashed the computer to factory defaults. They kept it overnight and it still did the same thing the next morning. They are now replacing the steering pump and said that should solve the issue. I get it back today.
Is your steering box the -AC version? The part number with AC, AD, etc. is on the top of the steering box. It is near the right driver's side of the radiator at the bottom.

I don't know which version it is, but I'm sure it was not AD. They said I would get the most updated version. I am picking up today so I will check and let you know.

It was replaced with the -AD version and is working perfectly.

Not sure if this is relevant but "A LOT" of new cars with any type of lane assist tech feels like this. The vehicle thinks you are changing lanes without using the turn signal and seems to resist changing lanes. I always use my turn signal but I still found this feature off-putting. I turned it off in both an Audi and Volvo. Just a thought.
I never use my turn signal , because it distracts me from where I want to go .

I had the TSB applied and so far the issue seems to be resolved, although the route our jeep is driven most of the time means it doesn't get on the highway until it has already warmed up... so it's hard to be sure.

Even so, I'm concerned about the nature of the fix. Was this really a software problem from the beginning, or is software being used to compensate for a hardware problem because it's cheaper for Jeep to do so? Pardon me for being skeptical of a company that tried to remove a feature they sold to their customers (off road pages) rather than fix the issue they were having.

This morning on my way into work on my 20 mile commute I experienced this for my first time. It was absolutely not safe. I slowed down to 60 and drove it strait to my dealer.

The sad part is that the service writer seemed completely uncaring as he asked me to just go make an appointment. I had to insist that it was unsafe and that it get looked at, only to get the runaround that they are busy and we'll see if anyone can work on it. I even pulled up the TSB from this site to show him and he didn't want to look at it or note the number saying only "our guys will figure it out". I'm starting to dislike this service department.

Hey redracer,

I've escalated a case for you so someone can work with you and your dealership to ensure this is addressed, and we're sorry this was your experience with the service department. If there's anything else you need in the meantime, don't hesitate to PM us again!

Someone should report this to the dealers insurance company; Pretty reckless handling of your safety complaint. The vehicle may not be safe on the freeway.

Thanks Jennifer for your help. I just got a call from the dealer that they preformed the TSB and it's ready for pickup. I really hope that this is solved.

File a safety complaint with the NHTSA. That might be the only way FCA will issue a recall for the TSB and make the dealers more responsive.

No recall on steering boxes. There is a recall for intermediate steering shaft. There is also a TSB for a steering programming flash.

I had this same exact thing happen to me leaving the dealer in Nevada.

My fix was they drooped the front end, tightened a few loose "factory" install bolts, (they said they checked all steering linkage), AND reflashed the Jeep.
Never came back.

I changed lanes on accident if I tried to turn to the left.
Would be stiff, (above 60 mph), then let loose.

Try not to laugh too much, .... "Check Yo nuts" :)

Good luck

Yes, definitely, this service bulletin corrects the issue. I started having similar problems once the weather turned cold; asked the dealer to apply the steps in this TSB, and the issue went away, plus the Jeep steers much better now.
Just an update from my perspective and my 18 JLU, I had a local CDJR shop perform this corrective action last year 2018 around this time. Yesterday and this morning experienced the same issue, with today having more resistance lasting more than a brief moment. Similar conditions, cold startup and driving within 15 minutes at temperatures around 30-35 here in Northern California. After driving for a few miles and possibly everything "warming up" the issue subsided. I dont regularlarly have passengers with me so recording this issue wont be a safe thing to do. Like everyone else, outside of Fall and Winter seasons, steering is great. Additionally, this issue for me occurred before any mods, literally withing four months of purchasing my Jeep. Just putting this out for additional info, going to call my service department again to see what other fix can be performed.
