Went to my dealership, they reinstalled the dampener since my wobble returned, but could not address the loss of power steering, they said it needed to be brought in when it was happening!
Hi Shawn,
We're sorry to hear your dealer was unable to remedy this. Most times your dealer does need to be able to replicate in order to identify a repair procedure. I do understand your frustration. Should you decide to continue working with your dealer, please feel free to send us a private message!

Iā€™m going to schedule an appointment with my dealership and leave my Jeep there overnight and tell them they need to take it for a test drive first thing in the morning. With the temps dropping into the 40ā€™s here at night it acts up every morning now so the temperature definitely plays a role in this. I drove it last night for the first time in a few days and I was having the issue and this was the first time I felt a click when it got stiff and felt locked. Guess we will see. I definitely think itā€™s related to power steering somehow.

right, of course... even though we've seen a number of these reports of power steering issues over the past year, there's nothing the dealer can do until @Shawn19 crashes on a curve? is that really what FCA wants?

these issues need to be reported to NHTSA: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

I'm jumping over from the thread where we are discussing play in the steering. Does your car have any on center steering play?

Sorry but it just seems Jeep has not been able to set the new aluminum steering gearbox up and it has thermal tolerance issues. Slightly too loose and play, slightly too tight and risk of lockup.

Not quite the same issue here, but my concern is it will eventually get to the point of locking up.

If youā€™re in Denver area now you know the temps have dropped to the 20s and lower at night.

Well yesterday I was driving on the highway about +70mph. When I went around a curve that required me to turn the wheel to the left about +5 degrees the steering wheel stuck for a brief moment and then gave way. It felt like a slight pause in the wheel and then with a bit more effort it move past the point and was normal.
This occurred for both left and right movements.

I have 20,000 miles and lived in Maryland before with no issues. Doesnā€™t get as cold there.

Anyone else with similar issues. My concern is it will become a full lock issue when Iā€™m driving in the mountains this winter and off I go down the side.

Had this happen last year where the steering wheel would lock up briefly on turns. A few days later that resulted in the whole Jeep shaking violently on start up. Towed it to the dealer and they replaced a pump and the throttle body control.

Thereā€™s a few old threads that list the multiple TSBs that are related.

It hasn't been that cold here in Jersey yet but I did experience this last year and one cold night a month ago. The dealership applied the tsb so now I'm waiting for a cold day to see if that works. I think people had good results by changing out that crappy chinese gear box for the updated one.

I'm "this" close to just pulling the trigger on the whole PSC kit. Theoretically it fixes SOOO many problems or potential problems all at once and gets me hydro assist which I plan to add regardless.

Mine feels tight overall when it is cold but my problems have mostly occurred to the right. Iā€™m not sure it matter where it occurs, I think there is just something messed up with the steering overall and it doesnā€™t seem to be getting the attention it needs.

I'm having the same problem with my 2018 JL Unlimited sport s. I took it to the dealer and they said I needed an alignment and some bolt were loose and they fixed it and this morning I had the same problem. I'm going to drop it off in the morning and let them know they need to figure it out through the warranty. The video that guy posted of him turning left and then locking up and jolting on a curve is EXACTLY what is happening to mine. It's pretty dangerous they have to figure out the problem. My Jeep only has 6200 miles on it

Interesting. I'm one of the people with ~1" of play in my wheel and on the more recent cold mornings it seem like it's tighter and more in the 0.5-0.75" range.

I had this happen once on my JK but it was the cord for the block heater that had fallen down and was jamming the steering linkage.

I took my Jeep in to the dealership for the steering Dampner recall, the steering issue and one of the Jeep wave oil changes.

It appears the steering Dampner was installed upside down and they put 6 quarts of oil in... That doesn't leave me very optimistic that the software update they installed actually took care of my steering lock up. I guess the upside is that the shop tech doesn't create the software, so I doubt he screwed that up.
