I have joined the club. When it's cold out, the first few minutes I'm driving, the steering wheel won't turn unless I force it, which results in over-steer. Looks like I'll be taking my rig to the dealer even though I'd rather not have them touch it!
Good Luck! I have had mine in 3 times now and of course it never does it for them. I actually bought another car so I had a reliable vehicle to drive. Jeep could be testing this. All they have to do is let the jeeps sit out in the cold temps for a couple of days and then drive them. Do we have to wait for someone to get killed or seriously injured and an ensuing lawsuit against them for the problem to get the attention it needs?!? This is ridiculous!

Hi WalkingJL and John,
We're sorry to hear that you have both experienced a steering concern. Should you decide to visit your dealers, feel free to send us a PM. We'd be happy to connect you with a Case Specialist to assist.

Tag them like this:
@JeepCares

I see you're in Woodland. A couple people on the forum have taken theirs to Roseville Jeep. There isn't a resolution yet, but at least their service manager acknowledges there's a steering problem (at least the loose/wandering issue). The regional tech was out there last month.

Good luck!

Same thing happened to me 4 times this week during cold morning drives. Going through different posts, I've seen 1 person mentioned the software update (TSB 08 092 18) fixed it, but everyone else stated otherwise. Any other workaround or suggestions if TSB didn't fix it?

Lovely. Has @JeepCares assisted at all? In addition to this issue I have the issue with intermittent hot air coming through when I have my AC on and the super loud radiator cooling fan. Fun times.

I picked my Jeep up from the dealership on Thursday, but unfortunately it has not been cold enough yet to see if the problem was fixed.

This time the dealership was able to replicate the problem on mine. They said the signs point toward the issue being with the steering gear, so they replaced it. I will let you know if the problem comes back.

For what it's worth, I do think that getting @JeepCares involved is worth it. Based on my understanding of what Jeep Cares does, they are able to use information, troubleshooting and possible fixes sourced from all of FCA's dealers as well as info from FCA's engineers and designers and not just the dealership's techs looking up info on their computer. Also, it ensures that FCA as a whole has documentation of recurring issues and not just regional dealerships. With more documented incidents Nationwide, it may prompt a recall sooner. And of course it also puts documentation in place with FCA, God forbid the worst should happen.

From what I have been told the intermittent hot air is normal. I have heard that it is part of the vehicle bringing in fresh air from outside the vehicle and/or that it might be a result of the climate controls auto feature trying to reach and maintain the desired temp. Those are plausible explanations, but I have no idea if they make sense for what you are dealing with. You might try turning the recirculate button on and see if that stops it from happening.

The radiator fan had some TSB that (if I recall correctly) adjusted what temp the high speed kicks on, but ultimately the Fan's noise isn't changing unless they develop a new fan.

The one frequent complaint that doesn’t bother me is the fan noise! It lets the pedestrians know to get out of the way.

As for my steering lock up issue I’ve got Jeep Cares working with me now. Hopefully they get something figured out. I will keep you posted.

I took mine in for steering bind. They did the recall on steering stabilizer. That’s it. I told them about the tsb but they said my jeep was updated and flash wouldn’t work. Frustrated as hell. Only happens when it’s 30 degrees out. Now their saying it has to be happening at the dealer. I live in Mississippi weather is not consistently cold. Pisses me off.
This is what my dealer does. Only solution is to let the jeep warm up before I drive it when it's cold and parked outside. It's bullshit.

My jeep is in garage about 60 degrees. But it will not bind until I’m over 65 mph trying to change lanes or curve. Sucks knowing more than service manager about how to fix your rig. Makes the warranty almost worthless having to deal with these clowns.

it would be interesting to know if folks experiencing this have any "play" in the steering. this is usually described as a dead spot left and right in the steering (while driving straight ahead), such that the wheels don't actually turn until you rotate the steering wheel through the dead spot. the theory is that steering boxes that are adjusted too tight (no play) might be creating a binding issue when the temperature drops (thermal contraction of the metals used in the box).
My first issue was very loose steering with a couple inches of play. A flash TSB was performed and it made it.....better, not great. Now I’m having these issues, so you may be onto something.

I didn’t think I had play in my steering since this issue started, but the longer this goes on I feel like it has more play after it warms up and the binding has ceased.

Ok, been off the Forum for a while, nothing personal just slammed with work related issues. (I was an OG here when the JL arrived though, lol). Anyway, I had this happen for the first time the other day. I was driving home from work, slight right on ramp, at highway speed (60/65mph) steering locked up for a second and then kicked back in. It was about 10 minutes into my drive home. Weather? I don't really remember, chilly but not freezing. I have not got the death wobble recall done yet. I've never had death wobble, or sloopy loose steering. Always has been tight and vehicle rolls straight as an arrow.....
