Ok, so does anyone know of a shallower than normal, or adjustable depth, tire carrier? My new wheels are shallower from the rear of the wheel to the back of the holes, so my spare is sitting about an extra 1.5 inches further off the gate than the stock wheels did. Anyone have a fix? Thanks!

I don’t think anyone makes such thing. In fact, all the adapters I’ve seen out there do precisely that: push the spare away from the tailgate.

Just make sure your spare tire rests against the rubber bump stops to reduce the amount of flex it exerts on the tailgate.

That’s exactly the problem. There’s about 1.5 inches between the tire and the bump stop.

Glad to know I’m not the only one. Surprised that no one has come up with a more significant solution though. Like an adjustable depth tire carrier. @Rugged Ridge you listening??? 100% market share right here!

I was in the same boat after installing 8.5"x17" wheels with 5.2" backspacing...I installed the Teraflex HD Alpha Tire Carrier which is adjustable not only up and down (3 positions) but slides in and out for exact adjustment Perfect and rock solid, a 100% no-regrets mod!

I used the 1 inch rubber chair tips on mine. it fit perfectly for a 295/70 r17 milestar patagonia. My tire was not touching by a .50 of an inch. This was a perfect solution.

Do your jeep a favor by getting an adjustable carrier. The previously mentioned Teraflex Alpha HD is a great option, if your looking to stick to a 35 or smaller tire. I had one and it was great. Had the inner sidewall pressed into the tailgate rubbers nice and firm. I only replaced it because it was maxed out with a 38x13.5 spare, and I wanted the peace of mind that came with a full hinged tailgate reinforcement with carrier.

I only have rear pics. 1st with a 35 on factory wheels. 2nd with the 38x13.5 on a 17x9 wheel. Both are with the carrier at the highest level.

Teraflex.

Are you running any kind of tailgate reinforcement right now? Or are you bone stock?

Geez, for that price it better reach down, pick up the spare tire and mount itself!
Yeah, it's not as cost efficient as pillaging chair parts at the hardware store, but it's the most cost efficient way of doing it properly.

It's expensive, but take one look at the Mopar version (which sells for not much less) and you'll see where that money went.
