I'm trying to figure out how that works when you head to Moab for camping and rock crawling. I'm guessing you roll the dice and go without a spare.
I’ve seen a lot of Jeeps with no spares in Moab, seems to be the trend. Given the trails are all slick rock and don’t have a ton of sharp rocks I’m guessing the risk level is low. Most have said they have a spare at camp thoughz
99% of the "spare tire delete" people, they don't delete the spare tire. They delete the "spare tire mount" on the tailgate. They most likely still bring the tire with them inside the jeep or on the trailer. Nothing wrong with that, just thought I should point it out.

I don't like the big tire hanging on the back. It's heavy and obstructs the view. I leave it at home and only put it back on when I go wheeling. The mount is still on the tailgate should I need it. The look of a mount on the tailgate without a tire doesn't bother me.

I don't go wheeling without a spare. That's just me.
That’s my understanding as well as most people I’ve talked to out wheeling have a spare back at the trailer or camp, which I would do too.

To do that you'd somehow need to get the spare (and all your camping gear) to the camp.

I'm guessing they'd have an empty spare mount on the rear. I don't think I've ever seen that in Moab on any of the many times that I've been. Probably because it looks questionable AF (IMHO)?

Talking more about the trailered rigs with spares in the tow truck or on the trailer.

My words of wisdom hard learned are this as soon as you take it off you will need it when you have it on you don’t need it. I’ll learn this because when I did not have my winch on, I got hopelessly stuck many many many times while my winch is on, I never get stuck. I got a feeling to be the same way for tires.

In a JLU, it easily fits in the back. I pack light, typically a backpack and small cooler will last me for days.
I have reinstalled the tire carrier before, on a 2 door. Not worth the hassle on the 4. And what do you do if you get 2 flats on the trail?

I agree I have seen many with no spares even when they were running solo. Seen one coming down from top of the world when we were almost to the top and thought many they are risk takers simply because so far out and not always going to see another jeep or SXS. On some trails like Fins and things not such a big deal but those ones where you are a long ways out and low traffic could be a pain.

…all the plugs, sidewall patches etc…

…I do take my toddler son out with me often so my biggest concern…
Everything involves some level of risk. Some random thoughts that don’t necessarily apply to you.

Having tire repair kits without actually practicing and learning to use them seems similar to carrying a Hilift jack without practicing and learning to use it minus the possibility of injury.

For me, with a toddler in the equation , I would say a spare is worth it. Again your choice.

Relying on others for a spare (or tools, extra fuel, water etc) or having no spare because it looks “clunky” or ir costs money for a decent tire carrier is an odd line of reasoning…again to me. I’m sure I do plenty of things other people would disagree with.

I’m in the process of deleting mine, I’ll report back with regrets if I have any.

I’m not planning on putting the spare in the Jeep. I don’t wheel solo, and I like my chances with plugs and sidewall tape.

And I’m guessing with no toddler. That’s the deal breaker in the scenario for me. Maybe an unreasonable concern, but still would make it a no for me.

Exactly. No toddler, and the fellow rider that I would inconvenience would be my wife, @R4NS0M.

For whatever it's worth - this is not related to off roading - but I was rear ended yesterday coming off a highway exit (I was stopped). There was NO damage to my Jeep or the person's car who hit me from behind. We could only surmise that they hit the 35" tire on the back which prevented either car from sustaining any damage. I *almost* removed my spare shortly after purchasing my Jeep in March, but took the plunge and bought the tailgate reinforcement. I had my 11 year old daughter in the Jeep with me and was certainly glad I had left it on...

For a daily it’s no big deal to not have a spare “usually” just less convenient if you should need it. But my daughter did hit a chunk of metal on the highway that ripped her sidewall open. There was no road side fix for that. The tire was trash. Good thing she had a spare on the back.

And 99.9% of the time I’m driving my own shit, not riding passenger princess.

I’m a tiny bit nervous about this, but at the same time whatever happens, we’ll figure it out. No one is going to die from being inconvenienced if the worst happened and we lost a tire.

uhhhhh, glad no one hurt, but are you really sure nothing was hurt if they hit the tire? Lots of soft metal in that rear door
