Not sure the best location for this but I am planning on much more personal work on my JLUR. That means my garage needs some gear and upgrading (we built our new home planning for this work to be done). First thing, I think, is a compressor. We will use this for work in the home but also for working on cars. Lookin for guidance about what to get etc. I found a good deal on a craftsman but also have a suite of dewalt tools I love so should I look there? Thanks for any help!

Spend the money on a good compressor and you will have it the rest of your life! It all depends on how much air you need to run (CFM) and how often you wanna hear that think running! I recommend a entry level commercial compressor with at least an 80 gallon tank and a 5 or 7.5 HP cast iron motor. That should do anything you want short of running sprayers and such for long times. Keep in mind this is very basic recommendations. You can really go down a rabbit hole on this one!

Ingersol Rand comes to mind for a decent one under 2K

Don't buy a craftsman if you want one that will last.

Direct drive air compressors will rattle your brain in a garage. Get a belt driven one.

Great direction here, thank you. Researching all the comments today - much appreciated! I'll add that this would be in addition to any on-board compressor I add to my Jeep.

I read your post here a few days ago and it inspired me to make a commitment to servicing my own Jeep. I’ve gotten $ lazy about letting the dealerships and the mechanics fix my rigs. Returning to my Roots and rolling up my sleeves... ordered me some jack stands, torque wrenches and a new set of metric sockets. Busted knuckles ahoy!

Ive had this one for years. It works well for my tinkering with car, truck, Jeep, RV, wood working, etc. it’s inside the garage and is quieter than the oil less and direct drive models. Can be wired for 220 but comes wired for 115. I’m running on 220 though. Only thing I would do differently is get an 80 gal version next time. I’ve seen same basic unit in kobalt, IR, CH and a few other brands avail at Lowe’s, HD and tractor supply.
