Here is what I found on my 2020 Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon with the 3.6L ESS engine package.

Jeep Wrangler JL Solved: 3.6L ESS Main Battery positive terminal clamp? Battery-Positive-Clamp-01B

original post:

Hi,
I would like to learn where the individual cables go from the main battery's positive terminal on a Wrangler JL with a 3.6L ESS engine package.

I suspect I know which is which, but have not had time to disassemble and test, so I thought I would ask here to see if someone could share the info.

I have attached a photo and labeled the cable I added for the winch.

With the other two, I assume one goes directly to the starter and the other goes to the N2 high-amperage fuse block. Which is which?

Thank you!

When I did mine-I disconnected the slightly smaller cable and wrapped the end in duct tape. Don't forget to pull fuse #42 if you are going for the 850 CCA battery. Amazon has a few start/stop relay disconnects for around $35.00

I'm told that it varies from year to year-but the slightly smaller one is for the AUX Battery

I can't really tell if one or the other is a heavier gauge. The fabric tape is wound so that the two wires seem similar.

One seems to head straight down into a tray, and the other seems to head towards the firewall but drops down before it gets there.

I guess I'll figure it out when I get around to disassembling the connections.

Thank you.

When you pull the main battery-you may get a better visual?

I know what you mean-as both cables are close in size but there is a slight difference.

Just a guess here-but if you hook the wrong one up-will the Jeep still start?

At this point, I am just trying to document my specific wiring layout, so I have not had a cause to remove any cables.

In the heat of summer, I let the Jeep sit for a month and a half in a hot garage. For the first time since we bought the Jeep in the spring of 2020, the battery system drained below the 11.8vDC threshold.

We only use it for long-duration outings where the system is refreshed with an adequate charge cycle, and we habitually push the start-stop defeat, so we have had very good service from the batteries.

The system accepted a slow charge and is acting normally, but I am preparing for the day when it needs service. My 2018 era service manual does not specify which positive cable is which so I thought I would ask.

It should be readily apparent the day I disassemble the connections and employ a continuity test. I don't really need to know until then, but I thought if it was easy to ask and learn it was worth a try.

Thank you for your suggestions and comments.

You may be overthinking this. Put a new AGM 850 CCA Battery in and connect one ground cable at a time and see which one starts the Jeep. Pull fuse #42 and call it a day. I went to Amazon and bought a relay with memory to either use the start/stop or to switch it off for around $35.00.
