We are proud to now be a sponsor on JL Wrangler Forums!

Our SmartStopStart product is a memory device for the ESS disable button. It retains factory operation of ESS disable button, but allows the vehicle to remember your preference for each time you start the Jeep, rather than always defaulting to ESS ON as it does from the factory. This is why we say 'SmartStopStart is ESS the way it should have been designed'

Over the last two years we have shipped thousands of SmartStopStart modules to satisfied customers for the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) and the new Cherokee (KL). We are happy now to have our product for the Wrangler JL.

On the Wrangler JL, our product installs easily under the dash and it DOES NOT disable the Security Gateway Module (SGW) and it DOES NOT take up the OBDII port.

SmartStopStart also DOES NOT set any fault lights, warning dings or fault codes whatsoever. It has no side effects and it is fully compatible with the Wrangler factory remote start.

We have a FAQ here: https://www.smartstopstart.com/faq1.html

Installation instructions are here: https://www.smartstopstart.com/uploads/8/0/2/8/8028029/website_2018_wrangler_jl_v1.0.pdf

Just want to make sure I understand the operation/installation....this product (which seems awesome) cannot be used in conjunction with a programmer that has to stay plugged in, correct?

Actually IT CAN be used with a programmer if you desire. SmartStopStart for the Wrangler JL DOES NOT use the OBDII port.

In order to use it with a programmer, you would plug the SmartStopStart into the SGW bypass module supplied with the programmer rather than the factory SGW described in our instructions.

The only caution is do not enable the stop start override feature of the programmer if as has one, because this might confuse both units. Just use the factory ESS override button to operate the SmartStopStart module if you ever want to change the default for ESS.

So installing this makes ESS default off when you start the jeep? and is still activated by the ESS button on dash when you want to activate it it?
And if you forget to turn the button off it works regularly with brake pedal?
I have said this is how ESS should have been implemented from the start lol

Yes, with SmartStopStart when you start the car, ESS defaults to the state the button was in when you last turned off the car. So if you always want ESS off it will stay off. If you want ESS back on, press the override button to turn it back on.

It works the same as demonstrated on the Grand Cherokee in this video: .

What is nice is, unlike all the hacks described on the internet, it does this without any side effects or faults being generated.
And for folks who really do not need a full blown programmer, it costs much less and it does not mess with the security firewall in the Wrangler JL and it leaves the OBDII port open.

A pain to install, especially with big hands but works great.
I recommend reviewing the Ben Anton installation video https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...rtstopstart-on-his-wrangler-jl-channel.15193/. He demonstrates how easy it is to remove the lower panel under the steering wheel to aid installation which is especially helpful if you have big hands and also makes the cable easier to find. Jump to about 4:20 if you do not want to watch the whole video.
