The XJ that I used to own had enough room to lay down in the back with the rear seat folded down if you slept at an angle. The JL (2-door) has basically the same overall length, but it just looks to have less area back there, even with the rear seats removed. I'm hoping that there might be enough room if I move the passenger seat all the way forward and build a small platform that will sit behind the passenger seat. I've found that I can drive a lot more miles per day if my wife is sleeping and I don't have to stop at every rest stop or gas station for her to empty her thimble sized bladder. :)

My wife and I always sleep in the back when we go camping, I'm 6 foot and I find it comfortable. I think the JL has slightly more space than our JK but I'll tell you THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of bedding down in your rig, crack a window.
Sleeping in our 2011 JK Sport 5 years ago at Yellowstone lake, anniversary vacation, she woke me up at 4:30 in the morning with a headache, labored breathing, lightheaded and out of breath. I had the same thing going on too, my first thought was the altitude but it didn't fit. Then I thought back to my commercial diver days when they train you to recognize when your oxygen supply has been cut off and it clicked, so I rolled down a window and immediately we could breath again.
The first thing everyone asks is "did you ever take the top off" and yea, we had many times. Maybe it was just that specific Jeep but it was completely air tight to the point where if we had drank more the night before, we might not have woken up at all.
As far as our JL, we just got back from Montana where we spent 3 straight nights in the Jeep and the only issue was our roll out foam pads didn't do a whole lot of good because we both had black and blue hips when it was over. So invest in something quality to sleep on, get a good sleeping bag and crack a window, you'll be fine.
We also learned this last trip, the Jeep makes a great barrier between you and a hungry black bear wondering around your camp so there's always that.

Great craftsmanship! Congrats on that!
So how big is the sleeping surface?

And how did you get the rear seats so flat down?

I agree, I would love to see more of the under the flat surface detail on the portion of the bed that lies above the folded down back seats.

This was my direction too, only the cargo area section of mine is higher to serve as a more evenly spaced, floor to roof, cargo area divider when the bed's not in use.

Can you keep the section in the cargo area installed when the bed's not in use and the back seats are up?

I have a 2dr now, but I had my '08 setup for with/without sleeping, depending on the use of my trailer-
Ready for storage first-

Then close hatch's

Then sleep

The cargo area of the JKU/JLU can be custom modified and made for a comfy sleeping area for two and will be warm and SECURE-

I won't need to modify the 2dr-

I use an air mattress in the back (4dr). It's fairly comfortable for two so long as you aren't that tall. I have a couple of window screens to keep the bugs out while having the windows open. I found those from another thread on here about sleeping in the back.

Full Platform is 6’ long (front seats extended forward), 48” wide over folded rear seat area, 40” wide in cargo area. Rear seats are just folded forward in normal way. They still slope upward but the platform is flat above them.

Here’s a bit more detail @RussJeep1 @Euro JEEP

The 8” high rear cargo area can be left in place with rear seats upright. It has a plywood ledge at the front to rest the middle (over the folded seats) area upon a couple of clevis pins ensure it won’t slip off.

The middle section is simply a 48” flat plywood piece with a 3 1/2” lift block in front that when put in place, the lift block rests on the front edge of the folded seats. The lift block is screwed onto the plywood so it also creates a rest edge for the forward most portion of the sleeping platform.

Thanks for the additional info requested @WildBlue . I can see, true to the adage that "life is a series of tradeoffs," that by making your design lower in height and closer to the cargo floor than mine, you also gained a few inches in the bed portion's length by interfacing with the back of the front seats at a lower place, where they are closer to the front of the rig, than where those same seats are, higher up, and interface with my design: due to the nature of back angle in vehicle seats.

I wanted to be able to store more gear below the bed height, especially in the cargo area, outside the view of prying eyes.
