Hi there,

My 2door gets mud and snow all over its sides, but what really bothers me is getting my hand full of crap every time I go for the door handle. I’m not a big fan of mud slaps, so was thinking of getting side steps, either the Mopar plastic ones, or the Mopar black aluminum tubular. For the folks that have them, are they any good at preventing mud/snow from going on the doors and building up on the fenders? If so which one better?

Thanks!

I had the side steps on my 2012 Sahara and of course I don't have them on my 2018 Rubicon.

The difference is pretty dramatic, the flat plastic ones are the way to go to protect your hands/paint/rear fenders. From time to time I consider getting a set for winter use as the paint on my rear door hinges gets gradually stripped away by the gravel on the roads.

I have the side steps on my Sahara: they do a great job keeping dirt and debris from flying onto the sides of my Jeep.

Before buying them new, check out Craigslist. You may luck out.

Thanks guys - this is very helpful! Going for the plastic ones then, and will check out on Craigslist first!

I’ve had this same issue and installed the weather tech splash guards in the front. I have a Magnum Raptor side step but the sidestep is flush with the body except for the step. Essentially it’s useless. I will be replacing these with the LOD Destroyers as they extend out about the width of the rear plastic fender. Below is a pic of what’s on now and the LOD Destroyer I’ll be installing.

Make this out of 0.080 kydex. Smooth side to tire. Next time I would probably make it so it extended 2” more inboard.

I also did the Roam side steps, frame mount. I certainly did not trust the finish to not rust. I coated them with Raptor bed liner before installing. They fit right up to the flares and do a great job of protecting.

If you just need protection and looks with a lightweight step, the plastic ones would be the way to go.

I have the LOD destroyers and I am pleased with the protection from road grime.

Oh nice!! I love the look! Ao you feel they extend out far enough to prevent rock from angling over to the rear fender flare and side panel?

Yeah, I would say they will prevent the majority of stones , but aside from a mud flap, I don’t think anything will block them all. Tires will play a part in that too. I have the stock Rubi tires.
