Wow, surprised your post hasn't been censored or deleted (yet). It's been just over 15 minutes.
I'm back in the Detroit area temporarily (Ypsilanti) for my daughter's wedding. I grew up in Metro Detroit, north of the city in Macomb, Oakland and Genesee counties. Fraser, Waterford and Grand Blanc respectively. Pretty much conservative suburban Generica. I grew up in Fraser, my kids grew up in the other two (and mostly in Colorado). All wonderful places. But yes you certainly had to avoid Detroit proper like the plague. Grossly mismanaged just like most other urban centers. No one I knew was ever proud of Detroit, perhaps except for the Red Wings.
Good sound advice to have protection when traveling there. Drugs, gangs, graft have really been dominant for many (many) decades. But it seems (to me) that's exactly the way they like it. They can of course continue to vote whichever way they want. But living or even visiting near there, Detroit city itself should be off-limits for safety's sake. It's a desperate place and always has been within my lifetime.
Change is certainly what is needed. But never does, at least not for the better. Maybe (just maybe) Detroiters will wise up and see that a brighter future is possible. They just can't continue to do the same thing each and every election cycle. Yet, they do. It's both sad and frustrating. Growing up, I really wanted to be proud of Detroit. Eventually and infortunately I just felt we had to leave not only the Detroit area but Michigan altogether.
Argh, Denver is getting much (much) worse as well...
