Hi everyone,

I bought my wife a Rubicon a couple months ago - used 2020. It has RC N3 shocks on it; I was planning to replace these (but I don’t know with what just yet, maybe Fox 2.0s?)

the Jeep started making a sound yesterday and it looks to me like the shock has come off the top bracket (see picture). Can someone tell me if that is correct?

I’m planning to take it to someone on Monday, but want a plan for everything.

I’ve also attached a few other pictures. How can I tell if the Jeep is lifted? And are those springs stock or should I change those as well?

I have an F150 and put an Icon Stage 2 lift kit and want to do something comparable here, but don’t really want to lift the jeep any more than it already is.

Any advice or opinions welcome. Thanks.

Measure from top of axle tube to bottom lip of coil housing like in pic …..stock Rubi measures about 11.25 ish inches there….. it looks like you have a 3-3.5” Rough Country lift on there now….

Ok thanks, very helpful. I will measure in the morning. I’m leaning towards AEV 2.5” Dualsport rt with Teraflex track bars. Will call Fortec in GA Monday morning for advice.

as for that shock that appears to be off the bracket, how can I make that safe to drive? Is it better to just pull the shock off? I’m not too mechanical so I could use the advice. Thanks.

I need a better pic of the shock, more down where it’s off, I can’t tell if the bolt is missing or it’s actually broken…..

It’s up at the top. Here is a picture of the rear passenger top vs the rear driver top. In the first pic, it seems like it should be bolted in that bracket it is going around.

Is it bolted to something, or not bolted to anything?

I will go check again, but I was under the impression that it should be bolted to the bracket that is right there. I don’t know how to get it back on there, but if I had to guess, I’d think that bolt either loosened or broke.

Ok clearer picture with the protection piece removed. It’s clearly off, no bolt there

I did manage to pull it back onto the bracket… can anyone tell me what bolt specification is supposed to be there? I’ll go buy one and put that in so I can drive it with no worries tomorrow.

Ok dumb question… were these shocks installed upside down? shouldn’t that connection be the one at the top? Sorry for not knowing basic 101 here.

I have read shocks can be installed with rod on top or bottom. Mine (Bilstein 5100), were installed opposite way of yours.

The shock will have gas pressure pushing it upward. Use a pry bar or large screwdriver to pry the top of the shock into alignment with the hole.

When you buy the bolt, get a grade 10.9 bolt. This is the rating on the strength of the steel it's made from. If you get a common low grade bolt (typically grade 5.8) it will be about half the strength and may fail after some time. But could be used temporarily.

If you locate a grade 10.9 bolt of the proper size, it should be torqued to 81 lbs/ft. If its a grade 5.8, torque it to about 50 lbs/ft.

Most of the bolts you'll have on your jeep will be grade 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9

Now is your opportunity to start your tool set.
