Update 6/21: New set of problems.

A battery coolant system failure, and an out of tolerance secondary pump. (P1DBA-00, P2E46-00)

A new case is being opened for me by the dealership. First step would be to check the wiring harness (again) to see if any more pins need to be replaced. On the bright side, they are preemptively setting up a loaner for me.

Mine had the same issue, I believe. I drove it that way for almost 3 months - first 5 weeks was waiting to get an appointment. Part took 2 weeks to arrive, and then another 5 week wait for it to get installed. My MGU failed before that appointment, and the Jeep has been sitting at the dealer since. That was 4/26.

Good luck! I will sell mine or force a buy back in the next few weeks.

Update 6/28: Issue due to low hybrid coolant in hybrid cooling system. Additional coolant added to reservoir. System was tested for leaks, none found, and codes were cleared.

Per Courtney @JeepCares, the following TSBs were forwarded to the dealership and their EV specialist for review. I’ve since picked up the vehicle, but should any apply, will return the vehicle for further servicing.

There's a TSB 08-055-22 REV A. that was released recently in regard to reprogramming your Integrated Dual Charging Module with the latest software. I've included more information about this, so you can review it further.

As you can see in the noted section, there are 4 other flashes that are required in order for these updates to be effective. These are the following TSB's to note.

1. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - TSB 18-051-22 REV A.

Update 8/16: New Issue. Check engine light came on again. Vehicle had been undergoing several tests to confirm a leak in the EVAP system. One week in the repair shop, and a star case ticket later… the tech determined it was caused by a loose fuel cap.

What?! It took seven days and a star case to diagnose a loose fuel cap?

The 4xe has a pressurized fuel tank - you would think there would be some interior notification other than CEL to indicate a loose fuel cap.

Yes, very frustrating but not uncommon. I’m not sure why but many vehicles don’t specifically annunciate a “loose gas cap”. When the tank doesn’t meet pressurization requirements, it seems that a CEL is the preferred indication🤦‍♂️

Yep. I’m just not sure I buy that loose gas cap explanation at face value. I’m aware from some further research that there is a dedicated “check gas cap icon” (shown here under temperature display, not my photo)

Have an early morning flight, and was greeted by this problem again. Verified the issue with two different level 2 chargers, as well as the included level 1 charger. Just got the vehicle back from another week in the shop.

Had an enlightening conversation with one of Jeep's EV tech trainers last night:

Specific to the ongoing "Service Charging System" error, there are multiple potential codes which generate this notification. From his experience, the most likely root cause is not with the vehicle itself, but with the charger that it is connected to. To validate, the appropriate codes will be submitted to him and his team next time I drop the vehicle off.

Though it is possible for customers to clear the codes themselves, this is not recommended, as it may mask a larger issue. He has advised sticking to using strictly Mopar/Jeep branded chargers.

On my end, I've got access to a network of fleet service chargers. I'm also privy to their service history. To test the charger theory, I've offered to strictly use Level 2 chargers which match the specifications of the chargers used by Jeep's trainers and dealerships.

Here's where it gets interesting. Specific to my area, both the trainers and dealerships use an AeroVironment EVSE-RS 30 Amp model.

Yeah, we don't have one of those. You probably don't either. AeroVironment is known these days as a defense contractor - they are the ones providing uncle Sam with those loitering munition drones, currently seeing action in the Ukraine.

They sold off the EV charger business to Webasto four years ago. I assume these chargers were produced when they rolled out the Pacifica PHEV. That's the equipment they use to diagnose your 4xe.

My feedback to him was to consider adding additional charger brands/manufacturers to their development and training centers. In the real world, these vehicles need to work reliably with publicly accessible and user installed chargers - Mopar or not.

New Issue. “Electric Mode Unavailable, Cabin Cooling or Heating” error immediately after an oil change. Appears to kick in within first half mile of all electric driving. Does not go away when A/C and heat set to OFF.

Wunderbar.

Quick update: Confirmed it happened multiple times now. Called dealership, and have arranged for a quick look at. Dealership has an eight person long waitlist for rentals right now, no loans available.

Attached a copy of S2208000027. Highly recommend sharing this with your dealership / service tech.

Open a case with Jeep Cares. They can authorize a rental (you pay first but get reimbursed later). I dropped my 4Xe last Friday (the second time for the same issue, the first time, the dealer said it is a software update and send me back, and refused to follow diagnostic to rule out ECH), and opened a case right after and made Jeep care talk to the dealer, then they were forced to diagnose in a proper way, and they are replacing ECH (electric coolant heater) now.

Been in communication with Jeep Cares for a while now.

One small problem. The authorized rental has to be an FCA vehicle. There’s an eight person waitlist for those with the partner rental agency. So, I’m stuck going in for a diagnostic, and waiting on the rental later.

Update 11/16: Further evaluation of Cabin Cooling or Heating (CHOC) issue is not possible, as the vehicle has entered into the “normal” Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode (FORM) for the wintertime. Because vehicle is now stuck in winter FORM (with a recent oil change two weeks ago), there is no record in vehicle computer of the CHOC issue, and thus, cannot be further evaluated. Will revisit in the springtime.

New Issue: Weak steering damper. Vehicle has developed the fabled “death wobble”, which somehow eluded my super reliable JK. When driving at speeds over 60mph, any bump or change in road condition causes a notable vibration throughout cabin, lasting anywhere from five to fifteen seconds.

This is my Jeep log book. It’s 1/3 full of receipts, notes, codes and observations. Six issues with over 31 documented days in the shop. I’ve only had the vehicle for a year and a half. I’m getting tired, man.

Attempt two at same dealer. Only after getting jeepcares involved they started diagnosing. Took two long weeks to get it back. I will not set foot inside that dealership again, never provided any updates. This was my repair.

Update 12/29/22:

Using an off the shelf OBDII scanner, was able to confirm "Locked Permanent" status of HV Coolant Heater. This can be confirmed by the lack of any kw usage by the climate system. This would explain the persistent CHOC and FORM status my vehicle is stuck on.

Jeep Wrangler JL Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System, Service Charging System, Cabin Cooling or Heating, CHOC, P0E15, B9A (23V-787) 1

Jeep Wrangler JL Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System, Service Charging System, Cabin Cooling or Heating, CHOC, P0E15, B9A (23V-787) 2

This was not previously caught by my nearest trusted dealership, despite communicating the issue and requesting the tech to review the S2208000027 documentation. Will need to have the dealership look at this again at next vehicle drop-off.

Speaking of which - still waiting on the steering damper. original ETA was 11/30, still have not gotten part. I'm sure it's going to be a similar wait for the replacement heater. Going to reach out to JeepCares to see if they can assist.

For anyone looking to diagnose their own CHOC issue, I found the following instructions to be very clear and useful: response #198 by 4xeRubicon

Electric Mode Unavailable Cabin Heating or Cooling - Has this been solved? | Page 10 | Jeep Wrangler 4xe Forum (4xeforums.com)

the OBDII adapter they link to is cheaper than mine. Any ODBII Bluetooth 4.0 should do. If you don't have one on hand, consider purchasing that one.

Update 1/11/23:

Steering damper was replaced. This has resolved the death wobble issue, but will continue to keep an eye on it.

Recall ZB7 was performed. Without a check engine light (CEL), the service team was not interested in further looking into the previously identified HV Coolant Heater issue.

Lo and behold, CEL popped up this morning, and is staying on. Off shelf code scanner identifies it as a POE15 code (actually P0E15 - eyes getting old). Haven’t found any documentation online for this for the 4xe, but I do see a few references to this code on Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids. For that vehicle, this is also identified as a bad coolant pump.

Have I mentioned my previous Jeep was a bulletproof 2010 JK, with no failures outside one warranty issue?

Anyway….

Followup with nearest trusted dealership scheduled.
