I took the 392 out to Hungry Valley today. First time taking it off road. In fact my first time ever off roading! I scratched the frame underneath a little bit on a few rocks. Nothing major, but some of the black paint came off and I chewed up a few bolt heads. Is this something I need to worry about? Or is this par for the course when wheeling? Do I need to repair the scratches so it doesn‘t rust? Or just let it be?

Sounds like you had a very very good time ;)
Black spray paint if it bothers you to much... otherwise have fun!
Dont forget to air down your tires when you go off-road

Your choice. People will tell you that your choice is wrong regardless. So do what you think you should.

I fix stuff to keep it nice. Takes little time and little effort. Just watch your over spray.

PS... post pics of you wheelin. 😁

Slide under there with a can of spray paint and touch it up. No huge hurry. We are in So Cal and rust is not a najor problem.

Satin black Rustolem cut with 10% mineral oil. Apply with a fine brush the strokes will level as it dries. Looks better with no over spray. Or you can check out the selection of chassis paint at Eastwood.

SoCal is a dry climate, but there's the beach, and it seems like a lot of water is imported, so there is a miniscule chance for microscopic rust to start.

I've got a steel pergola in my backyard that gets a lot of sun, so after a rain it dries pretty quick. I thought it wouldn't rust in the SoCal climate, but after about seven years, I started to see some rusty patches. I sanded off the rust and painted over with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. I figured the materials and lessons learned from that could be applied to my Jeep's steel bumpers, side-steps, etc.

If you don't want to spray Rust Reformer from the can onto your Jeep, you can spray/pool it into a cup (or it's own cap) and use a brush for more application control.

You dont have to do anything.

You can paint to avoid rust. The frame can take hits offroad. Get some beefier rock sliders. The smittybilt XRC sliders do a really good job protecting the frame. I've scratched mine like hell. They do sit a bit low, but that's the price to pay.

X2 on the spray paint. I don't like rust or the option for rust myself.
