18 JLUR 8 speed Automatic.

In 4L with both Lockers locked.

Trying to climb steep rock face the transmission always starts in 2 gear and does not move into 1 gear ever.

Is this normal?

Yes, if you want 1st gear while in 4-lo you have to manually shift it.

I can't say I blame 'em - they're building for the GENERAL PUBLIC.

At nearly 5:1 first gear is AWESOME but most people wouldn't know what to do with it, and the Auto would want to upshift nearly immediately. Best to only make it available to drivers experienced enough and conscientious enough to ask for it.

I consider gear reduction the 8th Great Wonder of the World but it's astonishing how few people fully comprehend the benefits.

FCA doesn't want you to OVERREV your engine in 4LO/ 1st gear and it's easy to do if you let your attention wander for a second--so

2nd gear is a safety measure for your --WELL BEING--and as said, you can select MANUAL and be in FULL CONTROL !

Good luck

Most people don't know gear reduction is a torque multiplier. Most people also don't know that torque alone won't do anything.

1st gear 4.71:1 x transfer case 4.0:1 x axle ratio 4.10:1 = 77:1 final drive
2000 rpm would move a 35" tire equipped Jeep at about 2.7 miles an hour or about a leisurely walking pace.
