I get it but Im a fan of their looks and sounds like the quality of the sliders/steps are very good. From what I understand is their powder coating process is lacking. Im waiting to hear if there is a fix or what as Id like to get a pair of these.
If you haven’t seen it, I think that post #27 describes the “fix” that roam suggests: spend another $200 and the time to install an upgraded productt that won’t have rust issues. But, if you don’t want to do that the post goes into great detail regarding the maintenance that needs to be performed on the steps so that they don’t rust. Roam also talks about other coatings that could be applied to the steps and a process to get some level of credit back from roam for the extra cost of applying the new coating.

Take a look. It might help you decide.

Have pictures of the updated brackets?
I do not, but they are shown in another there post on here. That's how I found out about them myself. I was planning to document the installation, but it is already done so well there was no need. I was also going to take a picture of the new bracket, but I had 5 new wheels come in that were all damaged in shipping so I have been busy dealing with that and getting pictures for documentation for the vendor.

Did you mean the flag nuts? They have one that replaces the nutserts?

Yes, the new flag nut bracket replaces the nutserts. I think the holes in the frame for the 2019 may be a little oversized compared to the 2018, or the tolerances for the holes by FCA is a little loose as lots of people had issues with the nutserts spinning in them. The flag nut brackets resolve that issue altogether. I am very happy with mine. I have a few suggestions regarding maybe an add on that could cover the open are below and by the frame rails that could bolt on where it would make it like a mini boat side slider, but otherwise it is great.

For those looking for an alternative that stands behind their finish

I have the GoRhino Dominator D6 Sliders with removable drop steps one reason I decided on GoRhino was for their powdercoat warranty, GoRhino warranty's their finish for 5 years. While I have only had them since NOV yet live in Washington (one of the wettest states) not a spec of rust, regardless I expect GoRhino back their warranty.

Go Rhino warranty

Finish Warranty:

  • Limited lifetime on stainless steel products
  • 5 year warranty on black powder coat products
  • 5 year warranty on chrome products
  • This warranty does not cover exposed welds
Finish warranty covers peeling, flaking, or cracking. Washing all finishes regularly with car wash soap and rinsing well with water is the best method for maintaining the finish on your products. You must also protect the finish with nonabrasive automotive wax on a regular basis. The use of any compound which contains abrasives becomes a self-defeating exercise as the compound scratches the finish and opens it to corrosion. The use of harsh chemicals used to remove bugs and tar may also cause the finish to fail and should be avoided.
What they don't tell you is that you will be responsible for shipping them hell knows where. You know what it costs for an individual to ship back a set of sliders lol?

They would likely replace them they are made in mexico and GoRhino is in California, regardless that is still much cheaper than throwing them away. You would also only pay shipping one direction (confirmed with GoRhino). With the Roam you are S-O-L as some are discovering here there is not finish warranty. A little bit of something is better than a lot of nothing. What the specific GoRhino finish warranty suggest to me is they are confident in their finish work. Warranty's often gauge the confidence in a product especially with established well known companies (there are always exceptions though).

I am not trashing the Roams, personally I like them and almost went with them, I was pointing out options for steps where a manufacture is accountable for the powdercoat/finish work. Frankly the GoRhino warranty is the best I have seen and they too have a nice selection of steps and sliders.

Honestly, this is why a lot of companies only do bare steel, leaves the finishing to the end user. They should drop their price by $125 and ship them bare steel to people, and stop with the headaches. As for steps/sliders/rock rails, there IS a difference in strength. If you are going to hit the rocks, you'd be surprised how FEW rails withstand a hit without damage, and some of the big name ones can even damage the body. Looks and steps, sure, but where strength matters, the list isn't as long as you think.

I have had parts powder coated locally it is actually quite affordable, although the steps would cost probably $125 ea

Less then a year on the road and I'm less than happy, The lights? Meh. Pretty much assumed they were junk and they meet my expectations. What I was not expecting was the amount of rust inside the steps. I do live in a state that salt/brine treats its roads in the winter. And I know salt and powder coat don't play well together. However, I have never experienced this kind of rust after 8 months with any of my other powder coated metal over the years.

I replaced the led's with 1w 11mm bullets from Oznium. I used a step bit to open the holes a little.

I coated the inside of the steps with Eastwood frame paint. This paint comes with a 24" flexible nozzle to reach in all the nooks and crannies. It both encapsulates the rust and has a zinc protectant for future rust resistance. If it's good enough to coat in inside of frames, I think it should work in this application.

$70 in parts. Really hoping to get another year out of these.

That sucks having so much rust.
My understanding is that ROAM has changed the coating on the steps and rock sliders. Doesn't help you though...
I recently installed a set of the ROAM rock sliders on my JLUR. Fingers crossed that the new coating works better and they don't rust like yours did.

Which version do you have? The steps or frame mounted sliders? But @Endeego is right, they did change up their powder coat process sometime last fall I believe. I think @ROAM even mentioned the frame mounted sliders go through a different powder coating process than the steps.

But this is the only the one reason why I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the Roam sliders. I've just heard of to many issues with rust. And the sliders with their new powder coat haven't been put long enough for a good rust review. There appear to be a lot of places for salt and sand to hide in that you can't see without taking the steps off.

Roam should step up and be accountable for this rust issue especially inside 1 year. Whether they fixed the powdercoat process or not they clearly lack integrity and accountability.

I installed quick disconnect Ranch Swaybar links and after a couple months they were rusty, I called and emailed Rancho, and not only did they replace them they actually paid 4WP to remove the old and install the new. They had a similar issue they missed the corrosion resistence proces which caused them to rust Rancho identified it and they stand accountable.

i was seriously considering the Roam rear bumper but now no way...
