I am waiting on a 2019 JLUR build and have been researching accessories. These were on my short list for rail side steps for my short better half. After seeing this thread and the other threads on this I am fortunate I did not pull the trigger on these.

I've been reading up on a lot of problems that people are having with their Roam Side Steps. Here are mine after 4 months. RUST!!!

Anthony with Roam doesn't want to respond back on the issues, and after reading about everyone elses problems, it doesn't surprise me at all. I've emailed, called, and contacted Roam by mail on the issue. I finally decided to file with the Texas Attorney Generals Office, and I suggest anyone else with the same issues to do the same. If you dont have Anthony's #, here it is, but don't expect him to answer. The customer service is terrible. Buyer beware!

Pull them off and get them blasted and line-x'd. Will cost you $200 to $300. You will be happy once done. It's just surface rust and a poor powder coat job.

So the buyer “only” needs to spend an additional $2-300 so the rails are adequately coated against rust? It’s all good?
In what alternative universe does that make sense?

If you get the frame mounted version for $50 more it’s e coated which won’t rust (according to them). The rust issue is on the body mounted version.

Oh,ok. I get it now.
They have a rusting version, and a non-rusting version.
$50 more for the non-rusting version.
But if you buy the rusting version, no worries. $2-300 will set it right.
Makes perfect sense.
Thanks.

Not at all what I said. I’m pointing out that they are aware and sell a better version. They also supposedly changed powder coaters on the version people had issues with.

But don’t buy em. It’s not my company and I don’t even own them. Don’t care. Just pointing out that at least the company is working on fixing the issue moving forward.

I would not consider buying their products until they work on fixing the issue looking backward. I have not heard that they are interested in that.

That’s fair. They’ve mentioned helping customers but if they aren’t following through then I’d take them off my potentials list as well.

I like the looks and features of the product but decided not to get them based on what I read and saw on this forum a while back. Hopefully they get the steel, rust and coating down. Maybe worry less about giving away free LEDs and spending the money on better steel and or coatings.

Roam specifically says on their site the rock rail/steps "Exceeds all OE specifications for resistance to the elements." They recommend a different step on their website for vehicles in the snow belt. A different coating? Still, snow or no snow, rust like what the OP has is unacceptable after only 4 mo.

If you are currently experiencing some sort of surface rust, please note some care and/or maintenance is required on the ROAM JL Side Armor Steps (especially around the concave angles and internal surfaces). Please apply a mild surface protectant/neutralizer such as Fluid Film or Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector to the surfaces in question and the surface rust should dissipate. Periodic maintenance is required especially if you live in the rust belt or somewhere where the roads are salted extensively.
What are your recommended periodic maintenance procedures? Just apply Fluid Film or Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector? Wire brush and spray paint?

I bought Nfab aluminium, I live in Ohio. No more rust. That's part of the reason that I traded the JK for the JL. Less steel to rust.

One word... GoRhino

5 Year finish warranty

Go Rhino® warrants its products to be free from defects in material and workmanship. This limited warranty extends for 5 years for black finishes, 5 years for chrome finishes, and for the lifetime of the product for polished stainless finished products from the date of purchase for parts ordered after April 2004. Warranty claims must be accompanied with the original invoice and photos of the product. It is the customer’s responsibility to clean regularly and protect finish with regular applications of a nonabrasive polish that is compatible with the product’s finish.

This warranty covers the cost of the product only and does not include the cost of removal, installation, or shipping of the product. This warranty is void if the product shows signs of alteration, misuse, mishandling, improper care, neglect, improper application and/or damage due to improper installation. This warranty provides a one-time replacement on workmanship if all of the above conditions are met.

Finish Warranty:

  • Limited lifetime on stainless steel products
  • 5 year warranty on black powder coat products
  • 5 year warranty on chrome products
  • This warranty does not cover exposed welds
Finish warranty covers peeling, flaking, or cracking. Washing all finishes regularly with car wash soap and rinsing well with water is the best method for maintaining the finish on your products. You must also protect the finish with nonabrasive automotive wax on a regular basis. The use of any compound which contains abrasives becomes a self-defeating exercise as the compound scratches the finish and opens it to corrosion. The use of harsh chemicals used to remove bugs and tar may also cause the finish to fail and should be avoided.
