I will be moving forward and getting a Rhino Pioneer system rack for my JLUR to carry gear (not RTT). For those that do the same do you find value in the optional side rails or do you largely get by with just ratcheting down your gear without the rails?

I've had the side rails since the day I installed the rack. I originally had them on the outer-most tracks, but moved them to the next track inwards each. This gave me the outside track to mount my awning on one side, and the bike mount on the other. They also are perfect for mounting a kayak- keeps it from moving laterally and they make easy tie-down points.
