I leased a JL soft top and installed the Gobi exoskeleton roof rack. I planned to remove the rack before returning the lease but installing it took a lot longer than I thought. Does anyone know how they will handle it if I turn the lease in with the rack still installed?

Are you expecting to receive any value from the rack at the termination of your lease? I.e. are you wanting your contracted price plus some thing for the rack?

It definitely won’t help you in any positive way. The only negative I could see is they charge you the labor to have it removed. You would be better to remove it yourself and sell privately. Would it really take more than a few hours with a friend and a couple of beers to remove it?

Generally dealers are fine with getting “value adds” and won’t charge you a fee for returning it with modifications, but you won’t get anything for it.

I suspect that you'll be charged to remove it. If it was something more popular and subtle, like an Alpine stereo, that would be one thing, but Gobi racks are far from universally wanted accessories. [nothing against them - they're just not for most people]

So in my previous lease experience the dealer likes add ons it creates more resale value for them and you get nothing in return

Exactly, and if they don't then it's up to the leasing company's inspector to decide what they want to charge you for it. There is no way they don't charge a penalty for that.

that is only if the dealer wants to buy the vehicle from the leasing company.

But a Gobi roof rack is so rare that it would be a polarizing feature for most potential buyers.

Ok so hard to say what they'll do if I turn it in with the rack installed.

Anyone in the central/southern CA area willing to remove it and make a deal? Just send me a PM. It's for a 4-door.

Have you even asked just to see what they might say?

What’d you end up doing?
