If you’re thinking about removing your bumper, if you live in one of these states, you’re required to have them or you will/could be ticketed. Again, insurance wise I wouldn’t advise it as NHTSA (Regulation 49 CFR Part 581) does have a national standard which insurance companies do know about.. Food for thought!

This might offer a little more protection:

Rusty's Rear Fascia Cover Kit - JL Wrangler
I don't care for the cover but I do like the plates around the body. Pretty cool.I like the painted look though. Too bad Jeep didn't do what Ford does and paint the lower rockers and such with a thicker, color match undercoating type material. The factory rear bumper is just a terrible design if you actually wheel it. I see no reason to have one. I might go that rustys route on the sheet metal though. Thanks for posting.

I removed mine. get alot of extra mud and rock being thrown at the corner of the painted area. i went with the EAG rear bumper with tire carrier. it was like 275 off amazon. free delivery. but the tire carrier/ bumper seems a little flimsy as the tire does shake a bit when wheelin. if i was to reorder this bumper i would just order it without the carrier option.

I've had to repair them on our fleet vehicles because when the bumper gets hit from below it breaks the plastic brackets inside. It's just a cheap filler part to cover the gap between the steel bumper and rear fender. It's easily removed, but we try to keep the Jeeps as stock as possible so it either gets repaired or replaced. I don't know what it's like to remove it completely and drive with it off.

As for the plastic bumpers and totally removing a bumper, I don't think, after really looking at them, that they offer any protection whatsoever in the event of a crash. They're thin metal and mostly plastic. Considering how easily they break under light impact, I don't think they'd be anything other than broken plastic under hard impact. Ultimately the plastic ones are just aesthetic.

I removed my rear bumper soon after I got my JLUR. I ran without it for 6 months and recently picked up the DV8 mini-bumper with tow hook eyes. It is tiny, looks like a bumper, covers the frame horns and comes with shackles. I pull a teardrop trailer with a pintle hitch that looks formidable to those following me. Not sure what the big deal is anyway. The spare sits out 18" from the body. If the Kenworth truck grill even gets to my bumper past the spare tire and massive pintle hitch, I've probably got much bigger problems...
