I had MY*JLUR regeared to 4.88 DanaSpicer gears. After the 500 mile service, the shop changed the gear oil using GL5 80w90 Dino oil.

The told me under no circumstances to use RP or any other synthetic oil. The reason was the new gears require different oil.

They also don't want me to use the heavier oil weights in the rear axle.

I know that they have the warranty for the gears, and I don't expect the gears to have issue during their warranty period with Dino oil, but I feel that rp oil would be better.

Is their sound reasoning to only use gl5 80w90?

My UD44 w/4.88's (Dana Spicer) had a big tag that said to use only FULL SYNTHETIC 75/140 or 75/85.

I call BS on the shop...

Not only do I call bovine scatology on the shop, I also question their choice of viscosity. The Dana 44 axles in these Jeeps run hotter than any other axle under the same load that I've ever experienced. Under no circumstances would I be running xx-90 viscosity oil in them.

I have set of Dana Spicer 4.88 gears on deck to re-gear mine. While I will break-in with conventional oil, I will switch to synthetic afterwards and it will be 75W-140 in the rear and 75W-110 in the front.

I've received the confirmation of facts I assumed where true.

The shop is a *very* reputable shop, but in this case they are expressing opinions not supported by facts. This shop is not a engine/transmission shop, but more of a jeep lift, mod, bolt on that also does a lot of gears.

I am going to drain the Dino and replace with my RP synthetic.

Thanks all!

I just changed my rear diff oil. This is the stock dana 44 axle with Dana 4.88 gears.

It only held 1.5qts. I assume the reason for decrease in oil capacity with the gears are a lot larger than the 4.10 stock. Does this sound right?

No. gear ratio does not change gear oil capacity. The 220 holds 3.06 pints.

Well that matches what I put in...guess my memory of 2+ quarts was just wrong.

Thanks.

You may be thinking about the JK Dana axle capacity? The JL's are reduced from that supposedly in the quest for fuel efficiency.

you definitely want synthetic, especially if towing, or long driving a lot.

the color and name of the sticker on the outside of the bottle doesn't mean a thing.
