When XR was announced it was too late to add to mine and I would have had to reorder and start waiting again so I studied the gearing charts and concluded that 4.56’s were unneeded overkill and 4.10’s sufficient for light 35’s. Postings of 0-60 & 1/4 mi. times being just slightly better than non XR although not a Jeeps purpose indicate that 4.56’s are Not overkill. Input from experience of XR, regeared non XR and those who have driven both greatly appreciated. Spare relocation ordered, contacted regear shop but on hold until I decide. Also, gearing shop dismissed Isotropic finish as BS . Find another shop? Thoughts? Thanks 😊

Don't the 392's come with 3.73 gears unless they are XR models? I absolutely wouldn't spend the money to regear to 4.10's, go straight for the 4.56. If you had 4.10's, they are more than liveable on 35's even in a non-392, but 4.56 will be better all around.

Yes, 3.73 , charts and graphs indicate 4.10’s would be perfect but they are just numbers that don’t account for weight and rotational mass which is why I’m asking those with experience. Would be an expensive wrong choice!🤔

The charts and graphs all come from the days of 3-4 speed autos. The double Overdrive in the 8 speed will keep freeway rpms nice and low. Go 4.56, there's a reason Jeep didn't bother with the 4.10's they already had in standard Rubicons when they introduced the XR.

Good answer, because I was also using my old manual Dodge PU with 35’s and 4.10’s as a consideration .

We went 5.38's on 38's and that is too low. Not so much that it's not drivable, but on our recent 5300 mile roadtrip it definitely cost a few mpg rolling 80mph+. I think 5.13's would have been better all around and 4.88's for long freeway drives, but it crawls amazingly now.

CJ5 had 5.38’s and 33’s— if not for the Warn OD and Chevy V8 it would have needed a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back for HWY use. Probably still effecting my gearing thoughts.

I just re-geared my 392 from 3.73 to 4.56 as I’m on 37s. Honestly, I’d only go 4.56s if I had to do it again. Enough of a jump from 3.73s and would be hella fun on 35s.

AEV & Jeep both put 4.56 in their builds. I think it’s a great choice.

Dumb question. i Want to regear to 4.46 From 4.10. Have heavy 35s. Do I need regear both front and rear or just rear?

Both, but in my opinion those gear ratios are so close together the gain isn't worth the cost. You'll spend $2-3k for a few hundred rpm, and being that you have a Rubicon you already have more than enough gearing in low range. Personally I wouldn't consider regearing a Rubicon on anything smaller than 37’s, at which point I’d go 4.88’s.

I suspect a typo, went 4.88 but would only go 4.56?
